Young Matildas seal top spot in group at AFF Championship

Australia Under-20 women's team have sealed top spot in Group B at the 2016 AFF Women's Championship, after fighting back to secure a 1-1 draw against Myanmar women's team at Mandalarthiri Stadium in Mandalay, Myanmar on Sunday night (AEST).

The result sees the Young Matildas edge out the two-time AFF Championship winners, Myanmar, on goal difference to top the group and set up a semi-final showdown with Thailand women's team on Tuesday.

Fresh off their record breaking 20-0 flogging of Timor-Leste on Friday, the Young Matildas, who hadn't conceded during the first two matches, would have fancied their chances of another victory.
But they were forced to come from behind with Cortnee Vine's 77th minute searching cross-cum-shot helped in by the Myanmar goalkeeper - in a moment she would rather forget.
Tournament hosts, Myanmar - who had scored 19 goals in their opening two outings - proved stiff competition throughout the contest and had a goal disallowed in the 38th minute in controversial circumstances.

Young Matildas goalkeeper Jada Mathyssen-Whyman was adjudged to have been fouled, as she attempted to shut down an oncoming Myanmar attacker - much to the dismay of the home supporters.

But just three minutes later, Myanmar took the lead through Khin Moe Wai, who produced a sublime long-distance strike, which evaded Mathyssen-Whyman.

The Young Matildas continued to surge forward throughout the second-half though, in search of their equaliser, and eventually their patience paid off.
