Centre-back: Jose Gimenez
Despite boasting both Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani up front, Uruguay's toothless attack has gone unpunished at the other end thanks in large part to Giminez. The 23-year-old now has two clean sheets in two matches and even popped up with a last-gasp winner against Egypt.
Right-back: Nacho Fernandez
Nacho was immense in Spain's opening match against Portugal. Primarily a centre-back, Nacho has emerged as a more than capable right-back for both club (Real Madrid) and country, and his display against Cristiano Ronaldo and co. proved just that. Oh, and he scored arguably the goal of the tournament so far.
Centre-defensive Midfielder: Hector Herrera
Herrera's energetic display in defensive midfield helped stifle the likes of Toni Kroos and Mesut Ozil, as well as free up space for his teammates to exploit Germany on the counter.
Left-attacking Midfielder: Denis Cheryshev
After being rejected at Real Madrid and suffering injuries with Villarreal, Cheryshev has hit top form with Russia following three goals from his side's first two games.
Centre-attacking Midfielder: Aleksandr Golovin
Golovin has been central to every Russian foray forward. The 22-year-old grabbed two assists and a goal on the opening night against Saudi Arabia and was again involved as the hosts booked their place in the round of 16 with a 3-1 victory over Egypt.
Right-attacking Midfielder: Hirving Lozano
The talk of the tournament; Lozano's goal helped Mexico see off Germany in stunning fashion. Playing out on the left wing, the 22-year-old stretched the opposition at will and exploited the space in transition left behind by Joshua Kimmich.
Left Forward: Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo has already scored more goals in Russia than in his past three World Cups combined. His heroic hat-trick against Spain and early goal against Morocco has carried Portugal to the brink of a round of 16 berth.
Right Forward: Harry Kane
A toss-up with Spain's Diego Costa, Kane occupies the final spot up front after his brace - including a 91st-minute winner - helped England see off Tunisia. The last time an England player scored two goals in a World Cup fixture, Kane was barely three years old.
