Wollongong Wolves, Canberra United and South-West Sydney FC are believed to be among eight A-League hopefuls to make Football Federation Australia's expansion shortlist.
FFA is in the process of notifying bids and plans to formally announce its culled group on Friday afternoon, nearly three weeks after its initial plan to do so.
It leaves shortlisted teams with two months to submit their final applications before the August 31 deadline, with two new A-League teams to be announced on October 31.
It is understood the FFA recieved 15 expansion bids before deciding on a shortlist of eight candidates.
The final decision on A-League expansion will be made on October 31 with two teams expected to be added to the competition for the 2019-20 season.
