The World Game understands the Wanderers are looking to sign the Hull City striker as their marquee for the 2019-2020 season.
Campbell is a free agent after his deal with Hull ended last month. According to reports, the 31-year-old has received interest from across the English Championship, including Aaron Mooy’s Huddersfield Town.
The Tigers were keen to re-sign Campbell, but have offered him a new contract on reduced terms, meaning he is most likely to depart.
It is believed Western Sydney are among the suitors for the ex-Manchester United, Tottenham, Sunderland and Crystal Palace marksman and have made enquiries about his availability.
The Wanderers are in need of strikers with only Mitchell Duke, Bruce Kamau and Kwame Yeboah currently on their books. The club also has one visa position left available, and a marquee spot, with the exit of German Alexander Baumjohann to Sydney FC.
Huddersfield-born Campbell came through Manchester United’s academy and spent five years with the English giants.
After loan spells with Royal Antwerp in Belgium, and with Hull and Spurs, he left Old Trafford to sign with Sunderland in 2009.
The forward had four years with the Black Cats before one season with Cardiff City, where he helped the Bluebirds secure promotion to the Premier League. He then spent three years with Palace before returning to the Tigers in 2017.
Campbell has represented England at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-21 level. He made his senior debut for his country, winning his only cap in 2012 in a friendly loss against the Netherlands.
Campbell has scored 94 goals in 352 career appearances, which has included 11 seasons playing in the Premier League.
