Wanderers chasing Ribery as new marquee

Western Sydney Wanderers are chasing Franck Ribery as a marquee signing for next season, in what will be the first in their new stadium at Parramatta.

Coach Markus Babbel is using his connections in Germany to convince the Bayern Munich legend to come to the A-League, according to a report in The Sydney Morning Herald

The 35-year-old will no doubt have a host of offers from around the world, but Babbel will try and use lifestyle factors as an incentive.

"Franck Ribery, of course, I was in touch with him," Babbel told the Herald.

"I said 'OK, if you want to earn a lot of money then you have to go to Qatar or somewhere. But if you want to be a rock star, then you have to come to Australia'.

Ribery has played 25 times for Bayern this season, scoring five goals, including appearances against Borussia Dortmund, Ajax and Liverpool.

However, Babbel has conceded due to financial limitations, there is only a small possibility that a deal can be done.

"He hasn't decided at the moment but I can't believe that he will come here, because we're talking about a category that normally for the A-League is not realistic," Babbel said.

"We also have to go further, and find a team for next season – I can't wait the next 100 years. If there's a chance there, you have to try it. But the chance to get someone like that is maybe one per cent."

Ribery is not the only possibility though, with Football Federation Australia drawing up a list of potential marquee players for clubs to choose from, that they would help fund via Fox Sports' marquee fund.

Ribery's teammate Arjen Robben is said to be on the same list, with both Bayern wingers are out of contract at the end of the season.

However, Babbel is said to be resistant to Robben due to his injury record.

The FFA are said to have a $3 million marquee fund, which was a significant factor in the funding of Keisuke Honda's move to Melbourne Victory.
