Victory in mix as Bautheac nears Roar exit

Off-contract Brisbane Roar marquee Eric Bautheac has held secret talks with Melbourne Victory as he looks to remain in the A-League next season.

With a new head coach yet to be appointed following the exit of John Aloisi, uncertainty shrouds the Roar, for whom the French winger has managed three goals and five assists from 20 A-League appearances.

The lack of clarity over his situation at Suncorp Stadium has sparked Bautheac’s urgency in sealing his future elsewhere in Australia, though the 31-year-old might need to accept a significant drop in remuneration at another club, be it Victory, Newcastle Jets or even Western Sydney Wanderers.

Ironically, the most recent of his goals came in Brisbane’s 2-1 loss to Victory at AAMI Park before the international break.

It’s understood he had discussions with Victory officials in the build-up to that match.

The former Lille, Nice and Cannes man has shown flashes of inspiration without fully igniting in an often fitful spell at Brisbane, for whom he struck six times in 21 appearances last season.

Addressing his future, Bautheac told the Courier Mail: “I want to speak with the new coach … but we still don’t know the new coach.

“We don’t know the team for the next season.”

Bautheac had reported interest from American MLS teams New England Revolution, FC Cincinnati and Toronto FC in January and, in addition to A-League clubs, has been in contact with teams in France, Spain, Greece, Cyprus and Asia.

But he would prefer to remain in Australia. Whether that is with the Roar, though, appears doubtful.

“I need to be at a good team next season with a good coach,” he added.

Brisbane, with just three wins all season, tackle Sydney FC at Suncorp Stadium tonight, with Bautheac’s frustrations all too evident.

“It’s hard. I’m a player, I’m a winner. I want to win every game. I want to win trophies,” he said.

“There has been no stability … but we have to stay professional.”
