Top five headbutts of all time

After Central Coast Mariners striker Roy O'Donovan's eight week ban for his headbutt on Wellington Phoenix defender Manny Muscat, The World Game decided it was time to revisit five of the best headbutts in football history.

1. Gennaro Gattuso

AC Milan's Gattuso had a running battle with Tottenham Hotspur's assistant manager Joe Jordan during their UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash in February 2011.

But it finally erupted on full-time with Gattuso headbutting Jordan, who was nicknamed "jaws" and known for being a tough nut during his playing days.

Gattuso was given a four-match ban for his troubles and was sure to steer clear of Jordan in the future!

2. Charlie Mulgrew

The Scottish international was farcically sent off in May 2009 while playing for Aberdeen against Rangers.

Mulgrew barely even made contact with Rangers' Kyle Lafferty, who deserved an academy award for his dive!

Fortunately for Mulgrew, his red card was later rescinded and Lafferty was suspended for two matches.

3. Olivier Giroud

Arsenal's Giroud must have been suffering from a Christmas hangover of sorts, after his headbutt on Queen Park Rangers' Nedum Onuoha on Boxing Day 2014.

Giroud was rightly sent off and given a three-match ban as a result.

I'm sure Olivier took it easy on Christmas day in 2015!

4. Samuel Eto'o

Inter Milan's Eto'o produced a different sort of headbutt on Chievo Verona's Bostjan Cesar in November 2010.

The Cameroon striker used his head to hit Cesar in the chest, which eventually appeared to wind his opponent. Maybe the reaction was a little delayed though!

While the referee missed the incident, fortunately Eto'o was banned for three matches.

5. Zinedine Zidane

Does this one need any introduction?

There has been a range of stories which have surfaced about what Italian defender Marco Materazzi actually said to Zidane to prompt the Frenchman's reaction during the 2006 FIFA World Cup Final.

But let’s hope "Zizou" can keep his composure on the sidelines now he is in charge of Real Madrid!
