The Matildas bolter driven to achieve her World Cup dream

Western Sydney Wanderers rising star Jada Whyman once looked on in awe of her Matildas idol Lydia Williams, now she is competing with the 30-year-old goalkeeper for a World Cup berth.

WATCH the W-League LIVE, FREE and in HD on SBS VICELAND and streamed online via The World Game website / app from Sunday October 28.

Whyman was given a maiden call-up to the Matildas squad earlier this month and will be determined to secure her spot in the national team for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France (LIVE, FREE and in HD on SBS)  with a standout season in the W-League.

The 18-year-old is the latest prodigious Indigenous talent to earn a national team call-up, and follows in the footsteps of players such as Kyah Simon and Williams.

Earmarked by current Australia coach Alen Stajcic as a player to watch, Whyman has had an incredible rise from Wagga Wagga school girl to Wanderers starting shot-stopper and now a Matilda.

Set to enter her third W-League season with Western Sydney, Whyman said the possibility of going to a World Cup was driving her to perform week in and week out with the Wanderers.

"I remember watching Kyah Simon scoring against Brazil at the last World Cup and just thinking about it still gives me goosebumps," Whyman told The World Game.

"To be around those players now, and potentially be apart of it myself, is an amazing feeling."

Despite going up against her idol Williams week to week in the W-League, Whyman said she still looks up to the veteran Matildas goalkeeper.

She hopes to one day be an inspiration for Indigenous players too, just like Williams was for her.

"Any Indigenous athlete playing at the top of their game is someone young people can look up to," she said.

"Lydia (Williams) was always my idol growing up and she inspired me to keep working because she was living proof an Indigenous athlete could reach the top."

"I would love to be what Lydia was for me and give young players another Indigenous player to look up to."

Whyman said she can't wait to take to the pitch next week when the Wanderers kick off the W-League season with a derby clash against Sydney FC on Thursday October 25.

While last campaign ended in a disappointing eighth-placed finish for the Wanderers, the young goalkeeper believes the tide is changing for the Red and Black.

"This season will be a different story for the Wanderers," Whyman said.

"We have a stronger squad across the board and have really recruited well.

"Everyone is really excited for the season to start and I'm certain we can make a better go of it this time around."
