Sydney FC to save kids caught up in Barcelona academy closure

Reigning A-League champions Sydney FC are set to lend a helping hand to the families of several young Barcelona academy players caught out by the school's sudden closure in Australia.

Players abandoned by the project will receive free registration to the Sky Blues' Skills Training Program, once the coronavirus allows for its resumption.

Each young talent will be given the opportunity to train from several specified locations right across Sydney during term three of the school year, along with the chance to progress further with the academy should they so choose.

Sydney's offer is a kind act to furious families who have over $250,000 in travel packages and fees yet to be refunded after BCN Sports - the company licensed to run the Catalan academy - went bankrupt.

“It’s disappointing to hear what has happened to these kids and their families, and we are delighted to offer them the opportunity to join our program free of charge," Sydney FC chief executive officer Danny Townsend said.

“It means they can continue to learn the game they love through what is the only true and authentic pathway for football development in this country.

“We work with our local football associations and clubs to run the most reliable and well-regulated skills programs in the state, with a visible path to professional football.

“Importantly, parents know they can depend on us as we have been running these programs right across Sydney for over 10 years.”
There were said to be over 400 children involved with the Barcelona academies across Brisbane and Sydney, which aimed to teach them the methodology made famous at the 26-time La Liga champions.

Barcelona have since addressed their Australian closure, promising families the return of their initial investment.

"As you can see, FC Barcelona is just another victim of this situation, but what concerns us most right now is the families getting their money back and the damage that this has caused to our project’s image in Australia," said Carles Martin, the Barca Academy’s global director, in a statement to the Sydney Morning Herald.

"In this case, we cannot say how things have gone due to the global pandemic caused by the coronavirus nor say how our partner (BCN) has acted in recent days, but we can rest assured that the values set out by the club and the Barca Academy have had a marked effect on many children and many families in the country.

"We want to make it clear to the Australian families that if necessary, legal action will be taken to ensure that they get their money back."
