Spain was crowned European Under-21 champion thanks to a 2-0 victory over Switzerland in the final at the Aarhus Stadion.

Athletic Bilbao prospect Ander Herrera rounded off a fine team move by heading home the opener in the 41st minute, the first goal the Swiss had conceded in the championships in Denmark.

Barcelona's Italy-born youngster Thiago Alcantara, son of 1994 Brazilian World Cup winner Mazinho, put the result beyond doubt nine minutes from time, producing the perfect finish after spotting Yann Sommer off his line.

Belarus earlier secured the fourth and final European ticket to the 2012 Olympics by beating Czech Republic 1-0 in the third-place play-off in Aalborg.
