With Melbourne City’s Andrew Nabbout ruled out of next month’s Kuwait qualification hub, Kamau’s compelling form has spoken loudly with eight goals in 19 appearances confirming him as one of Carl Robinson’s few success stories since taking charge.
The fact 11 of those appearances have come off the bench only adds gloss to Kamau’s impact whilst many around him have floundered and stumbled.
The 26-year-old attacker - played as a wingback for much of his time at both Melbourne City and Wanderers - is revelling in the positional change bestowed on him by Robinson.
And, with his contract up at season’s end, the ex-Adelaide starlet believes the timing might be perfect to head offshore, with clubs in Europe, Asia and the MLS monitoring his progress.
“Playing abroad has always been one of my goals,” said Wanderers’ leading scorer.
“It’s something you always aspire to - and for me now I can see myself going over to Europe and giving it a shot.
“I’m really looking forward to that opportunity. But I need to keep playing well, keep scoring goals and keep assisting as well.”
Now in his third year with Western Sydney, Kamau was deployed ostensibly as a wingback under Markus Babbel’s ruinous reign.
He scored the opening goal in Adelaide’s grand final victory over Wanderers five years ago playing as a forward and has always viewed operating in the front third as his vocation.
“When you’re in that attacking role you’re able to make an impact with goals and assists,” said Wanderers’ top scorer.
“It’s a position that suits me pretty well. I’m targeting double figures for the remainder of the season.
“I’m playing with a lot of confidence and where I’m playing now just feels natural to me.”
With his ability to dart into danger areas, ride tackles and wrong-foot defenders, the former Australia U-23 international firmly believes he won’t disappoint should a senior call up come.
“It’s always been up there as a dream of mine to represent Australia,” he said.
“I’ve just been working hard to try and make it happen one day - if the opportunity arises I think I’d take it with both hands.
“It’s something I’ve aimed for with each season ... to take that step up.
“The World Cup is just around the corner and if I keep performing it’s definitely not out of the question that I might be there.”
Kamau was among the scorers when Wanderers upset Sydney FC 3-2 in the derby earlier this month, and he knows how vital another victory over the Sky Blues on Sunday will be to his team’s playoff hopes.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to bounce back (from the 5-1 thrashing against Perth),” he said.
“The last time we faced Sydney we were coming off a poor result and it’s definitely there for us again this weekend (to beat Sydney).
“We need to turn around that inconsistent run leading into the last four games (of the regular season).
“It’s very right on the table and there’s every chance for us to make the top six.
“If we get there I think we’re the sort of team nobody would be looking to play against.
“We have a squad capable of doing great things in the A-League.
“It’s just about figuring out what’s causing that inconsistency.
“Once we nail that we should be flying again.”
