Socceroo Taggart keeping cool amid heated K-League Golden Boot race

Socceroos marksman Adam Taggart has played down the significance of winning the K League 1 Golden Boot, as he runs neck and neck with Brazilian Junior Negao in the race for the award.

Both players currently sit on 18 goals apiece, with Taggart only having played 31 games to Negao’s 34.

Negao failed to score in his side Ulsan Hyundai's 1-1 draw with Jeonbuk on Saturday, leaving Taggart in the box seat with two games up his sleeve to Negao’s one as the season reaches its climax.

If they remain at level pegging, Taggart, 26, would take the honours courtesy of his fewer match minutes.

In any event - speaking ahead of Suwon Bluewings trip to bottom club Jeyu on Sunday - Taggart isn’t necessarily salivating at the prospect of bookmarking his debut year in South Korea with the accolade.

“It’s a bit of a tough one because while it’s nice to win those sorts of things at the same time, they don’t exactly mean that much,” said Taggart who has marked his last two Socceroos performances with three goals.

“You want to be scoring on a regular basis regardless, whether you win the Golden Boot or not.

“It’s all about reaching your own personal targets and the goals that you set at the start of the season.

“My goal was to be scoring regularly for my club and to try and win an FA Cup, which we did.

“So I’m really happy with that side of things. Any awards on top of that are obviously nice because it’s something that stays with you for your whole life but there’s more important things - and that’s just to be a regular scorer.

“As a striker you just have to capitalize when things are going well.”

Whatever happens, it’s been a year to cherish for the former Newcastle Jets, Perth and Brisbane Roar front man, with an excess of 50 games across all competitions, a return to international football with Australia and a reputation as an ice-cold finisher greatly enhanced.

“We’re looking to end the season on a high, although there’s not much to play for in the league,” he added.
“And if I can get a couple more goals that would be great.

“We’re now back in the ACL after our cup win and that’s really important to the club.

“Sometimes the competition is forgotten about in Australia but up here in Asia it’s taken really seriously. And in the K League top six will be an absolute minimum for us next season.”

Coming off the back of his clinically executed winner in Jordan, Taggart is looking the goods for Australia as Graham Arnold’s men look to clinch qualification for the final phase to Qatar 2022 with a flourish.

“It’s taken a few camps to build that confidence and really feel part of it again but I’ve known most of the boys for a long time,” he added

“All of us really enjoy having Arnie for a coach and we’re in a period where we’re really building - I think the (1-0) win in Jordan showed that.

“I know a lot of people are going to speak negatively and all that sort of thing.

“But a win is a win and you can’t have a perfect performance every single time.

“Good teams are going to win even when you don’t play as well as you know you can.

“But Arnie and the coaching staff have instilled that winning mentality.

“A big positive from the Jordan match was that even when we’re not at our absolute best we’re still able to grind out results.

“It’s a difficult place to go as has been the case for us in the past and I was really proud to be part of that performance.

“It was an ugly win - but the even the best sides in the world need them.”

Taggart's Suwon Bluewings kick off against Jeyu at 6:00pm AEST.
