Sassuolo have been handed a 3-0 defeat for playing an unregistered player in their weekend Serie A victory over Pescara, the governing football league body Lega Calcio said on Wednesday (AEST).

Sassuolo won 2-1 against visiting Pescara on Sunday but brought on Antonino Ragusa, a midfielder bought last week from Cesena, 20 minutes into the second half.

The Lega said the club could not use the player, having failed to communicate via certified email that Ragusa, 26, was part of the team's roster of 25 by the deadline of Saturday at noon, an infringement punishable by a 3-0 defeat.

Sassuolo claimed a technical issue was to blame and said they were investigating the regularity of their submission of the document before appealing against the ruling.

The decision halves the six points they had obtained from the first two games of the season as Pescara move to four.

Sassuolo's next league match is away to Juventus on September 11.
