Saints leave it late to beat Norwich

Southampton came out on top against Norwich City with a 1-0 win, while Newcastle United cruised past Birmingham City in the FA Cup.

The pair joined Liverpool as the latest teams to book their place in the fourth round of the competition.

Shane Long ensured that the few fans who showed up at St Mary's stadium had something to cheer about after he scored in injury time in an otherwise stale encounter.

Sam McQueen played the ball into the box with the Ireland international on hand to bundle in the cross and book a fourth-round tie against Arsenal.

Meanwhile at St James' Park it was a much more comfortable affair, with the Magpies winning 3-1 against fellow Championship side Birmingham City.

Matt Ritchie opened the scoring with a penalty in the 9th minute after keeper Adam Legzdins brought down Yoan Gouffran, with Gouffran on hand to double the lead in the 34th minute with a goal of his own.

David Cotterill got one back for the visitors, but Ritchie struck again in injury-time as they locked in a tie with Oxford United in round four.
