Sage calls for rebel states to be brave and vote for change

Perth Glory owner Tony Sage has broken the Australian Professional Football Clubs Association's silence and urged the four rebel states to "look at the bigger picture" when they cast their vote at Football Federation Australia's extraordinary general meeting that could make or break the game in this country.

FFA will hold its meeting to determine the shape of the new congress that has been the subject of a bitter dispute between the A-League clubs and the governing body for two years.

The dispute came to a head when FIFA appointed a Congress Reform Working Group (CRWG) to provide recommendations that will be put to the vote on October 2.

The CRWG wants the FFA congress to increase from 10 to 29 members.

If the recommendations that have been given the blessing of FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation are passed it would be the end of the FFA as we know it and a reform process would get under way.
But if rebel state federations Tasmania, Northern Territory, Northern NSW and Australian Capital Territory vote against the recommendation, FIFA would be forced to either install a normalisation committee to oversee the transition of power to a new congress or take the more drastic step of suspending Australia.

Sage, who has been Glory's owner for 13 years, has encouraged the four states that are understood to favour the current FFA and its beleaguered chairman Steven Lowy to be strong and think of the damage their 'vote against' could cause.

"My message to the four federations is 'don't be bullied or threatened'," Sage said from the Korea Republic, where he is on business.

"Just think of the bigger picture. Look at the consequences if the new FIFA-approved congress model does not get through."

If the CRWG recommendations succeed, the A-League would be run independently from head office and Sage said he was confident the clubs would be able to fund and run the competition even though he felt FFA undersold the league to broadcasters Fox.

"Yes, we will fund and run an enlarged competition," Sage said.

"We will have entry fees for new clubs and television deals and sponsorships. Everybody said the English Premier League would fail if it split from the Football Association. Look at it now."

Sage questioned the rationale behind the allotment of 40 per cent of the congress vote to four states that between them control only 18 per cent of the country's registered players.

"This is not fair. In politics this is called a gerrymander and is frowned upon," he argued.

Sage also accused the governing body of misleading the clubs for a long period which may have led to the animosity between the two parties that escalated into outright 'war'.

"How is it fair that the club owners who have invested a combined total of about $1.5 billion and generated about 85 per cent of FFA's income have got back only 33 per cent of their income," he said.

"All we asked for was 50 per cent just to stem our losses but all we got was a 'greedy owners' reply."

Sage, who claims he has invested $128 million in the club, said he could not put up any longer with the lies and broken promises emanating from FFA and it was time for change for the good of the game.

"Promises were made by Ben Buckley, Archie Fraser, Lyall Gorman and Frank Lowy about the increased distributions or at least matching the salary cap for the past 13 years that I have been involved with Perth," he explained.

"It never happened despite them adding extra wages on the clubs for the women's and youth leagues without consultation.

"Another lie was their promise to treat all clubs equally but I pay $200,000 more on travel than most other clubs. The AFL, NRL, NBL and the cricket have an equalisation account but not the FFA."
