Rooney on target as DC, Red Bulls share spoils in six-goal thriller

Wayne Rooney's fifth goal of the season put DC United ahead in the second half, but Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his third goal in the 90th minute to give the New York Red Bulls a 3-3 draw on Monday (AEST).

Rooney, a former England captain who made his Major League Soccer debut in July, gave DC United a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute when he finished off Oniel Fisher's cross.

Rooney also fired a shot off the crossbar in the 73rd minute, was denied on a breakaway in the 80th and had a corner in the second minute of stoppage time headed off the post.

Wright-Phillips became the second player in MLS history to score three tying goals in a game after Atlanta forward Josef Martinez last season, and he finished with his first hat-trick since 2016.

He scored in the 41st minute with a bicycle-kick goal off a rebound, rolled in a goal in the 76th minute and redirected a cross for his third goal.

Wright-Phillips now has 19 league goals this season, second only to Martinez's 28.

Paul Arriola scored DC United's first goal in the 25th, and Luciano Acosta put the hosts ahead with an individual effort in the 87th.

New York (17-7-5) is 8-1-5 against DC United (9-11-8) since the start of the 2015 season.
