Roma sends De Silva out on loan as Glory awaits full transfer fee

The immediate club future of rising star Daniel De Silva has taken a twist with Italian giant Roma in the process of loaning out the young gun for up to two seasons after paying the first installment of his $1.5 million transfer fee to Perth Glory.

De Silva, 18, has flown to Europe to undergo the formalities of the switch to the unnamed club, according to Glory owner Tony Sage, who confirmed the agreement to loan him out immediately was taken last month.

Sage said Glory was comfortable with the staged payments of his transfer fee, amid rumours that Roma's commitment to the deal might be waning.

“Danny is being on-loaned, which the family found out about three weeks ago, and of course we were also told,” Sage said.

“The last conversation we had with Roma was that they were very happy to have him in their fold, but that he would be loaned out for one or maybe two seasons.

“There were several clubs interested but he has now gone to one particular club and he is there now, and the rest of his family is following him in two or three weeks."

It was reported last month that the club in question was a Belgium team but Sage insisted: “Roma haven't told us yet which club that is. They have kept that to themselves.”

The mercurial midfielder was on the bench for his new club in Melbourne as it took on Manchester City and Real Madrid in last month's International Champions Cup and did enough in several training sessions to earn words of praise from head coach coach Rudi Garcia and captain Francesco Totti.

“Why would Roma take him to Melbourne and go through all the hoo-ha of putting him on the bench if they were thinking of welching on the deal?" Sage said.

“We have already been paid a portion of the fee anyway, and that was non-refundable. The amount is confidential but we are happy with what we have been paid so far.”

The diminutive play-maker, who forced his way into Australia’s squad as a replacement for the injured Massimo Luongo for June's 2018 FIFA World up qualifier against Kyrgyzstan, sealed a dream five-year deal with Roma in July after emerging as one of the A-League’s boy wonders over the past two seasons.

“I met Roma's CEO and manager of football operations in London only seven weeks ago, and they were very keen and it was my idea to get Danny out to join them when they were at the MCG for their games, and they jumped at it as a promotion for both Roma and Danny," Sage said.

“Everybody is happy. Nothing in his contract changes with him going out on loan and I can’t see them backing away now. I would be very shocked if that happened.”

Glory is anticipating full payment once the contracts regarding De Silva’s loan is signed and sealed.

Sage, meanwhile, said the club would on Tuesday unveil its latest capture, a centre-forward from Europe who he claimed could transform its prospects for the coming season.

“It’s a player and a name who will impress everybody and when it is revealed people who were placing us as finishing between maybe seventh and ninth next season will put us between fourth and sixth.”
