Brisbane Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young will miss several weeks for the A-League club after suffering an injury in training.

Youngster Macklin Freke will be thrust into an A-League debut next week with Young sidelined as coach Warren Moon prepares for life without his preferred custodian.

Young suffered an injury in training earlier this week and is facing several weeks on the sidelines to recover.

In a short statement the Roar confirmed the 35-year-old had suffered a "contact knee injury" but refused to disclose its exact nature or a timeline on his recovery.

It's understood Young has injured a medial ligament and will miss at least six weeks.

The news means 22-year-old Freke is in line to make his senior debut when Brisbane face the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on Wednesday.

Freke, a Roar academy graduate, was a part of the club's youth league winning team in 2019 before signing a scholarship deal later that year and has been an unused substitute in the club's two matches this season.
