Popovic has given us mental boost, says Perth Glory star Castro

Perth skipper Diego Castro says the Glory have gained an important psychological boost following their unbeaten start to the A-League season.

In a dream start under new coach Tony Popovic, Glory sit on top of the table after snaring five wins and two draws from the first seven rounds.

Glory are two points ahead of second-placed Victory and a comfortable six points clear of third-placed Sydney FC.

Perth will be aiming to continue their strong form when they take on Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium next Sunday.

Castro, who was appointed captain at the start of the season, said the players weren't getting carried away by the flying start.

But he said the confidence gained from early results was valuable.

"That's important in the sport - the psychology part," Castro said.

"The team looks good. I think every round we take confidence.

"But we just look forward to the next game. We will see what happens at the end. That's when it's important."

Castro missed the first four rounds of the season with a hamstring injury.

But the 36-year-old has made a successful return in recent weeks, making it through 85 minutes of Saturday's 1-0 win over Melbourne City.

Castro said the team's stunning start to the season meant he didn't feel rushed to make a return.

"Even when I wasn't playing with the team, the team was still looking good," Castro said.

"That takes a bit of pressure off me in terms of my recovery.

"Now my focus is on taking the fitness to the best level again. I am happy with the result in that part."

Glory are sweating on the fitness of defender Matthew Spiranovic, who lasted just 31 minutes against City before limping off.

Spiranovic had missed a year of action with a hip injury and was making his first A-League appearance of the season.

But Popovic is confident Spiranovic's latest injury - believed to be a hamstring issue - isn't serious.

With Alex Grant (foot) and Scott Neville (ankle) still sidelined, Glory can ill afford to lose Spiranovic for an extended period.

Midfielder Juande (knee) is a chance to make his return this week.
