The former Socceroos captain has made a successful switch to coaching since he hung up his boots in 2011, leading Melbourne Victory to an A-League Premiership and two A-league Championships.
The 46-cap Socceroos veteran said despite all his success with Victory there would be no higher honour than coaching Australia's national team.
"Without a doubt, I've not shied away from that," Muscat told SEN 1116.
"I tell the younger players in our team to reach for the stars, whatever that looks like to you, reach for the stars.
"If you fall somewhere short you won't be satisfied and I'm no different - I would love to manage the national team one day.
As a player It's the most humbling experience and most satisfying experience representing your nation, so I would love to do it as a coach as well and coach overseas at some point too.
Let's just see how it goes, I understand there's a process for all that to happen. You've got to be good at what you're doing now to be able to get those opportunities, so that is where my focus is."
Muscut took over as Melbourne Victory head coach in 2013 after Ange Postecoglou was named Socceroos boss.
He has since gone on to lead Victory for 190 games as their manager.
