Australian captain Sam Kerr carried on where she left off in 2020, starting the new year by helping create two goals in Chelsea's 5-0 win at Reading in the Women's Super League.

But even her pair of assists on Sunday was not enough for Kerr to take the limelight from England striker Fran Kirby, who scored four goals, including a first-half hat-trick.

Their deadly combination helped Chelsea move second in the table with the weekend's other five WSL games cancelled due to COVID-19 infections and injuries.

Kirby opened the scoring when she ran in unmarked to snap up Kerr's astute headed flick-on before cutting across keeper Grace Moloney and chipping the ball home right-footed in the 16th minute.

After adding a fine solo second with her left foot seven minutes later, Kirby was again grateful to Kerr in first-half stoppage time as the Australian looped the ball superbly across the Reading area for her teammate to complete her hat-trick with a deft headed finish.

Kirby wasn't finished, adding another header eight minutes into the second half as Reading's rearguard crumbled and Kerr, who had been influential up front, was allowed a rest when substituted just after the hour.

A late goal from substitute Ji So-yun completed the rout to put Chelsea second on 23 points from nine games with a match in hand on leaders Manchester United, who have 26 points. The two teams are scheduled to meet next weekend.
