FULL TIME! United claim the spoils in the derby, dumping the holders City out thanks to a second-half goal from Mata. The home side were vastly improved from the weekend, attacking just enough to take the lead, then settling into a disciplined defensive display against Guardiola's toothless side. Th

And that will do it from Old Trafford for now as both sides fail to get themselves on the board. It's been fairly tight with a sprinkling of openings and maybes. A lot to ponder for Mourinho and Guardiola but one thing's for sure - there must be a winner tonight. Stay tuned for the restart soon.
    • 0'
Guardiola makes nine changes to the side that drew at home to Southampton. Vincent Kompany and Leroy Sane maintain their spots, while there's also game time for the likes of Pablo Maffeo, Aleix Garcia and Nolito.
    • 0'
Michael Carrick comes in for Maroane Fellaini to bolster the midfield after the shambles at Stamford Bridge. He's one of four changes, with Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Juan Mata also getting starts in place of Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Jesse Lingard.

Manchester City subs: Gunn, Sterling, Gundogan, Aguero, Kolarov, Fernandinho, Adarabioyo.

Manchester City (4-3-3): Caballero; Pablo Maffeo, Otamendi, Kompany, Clichy; Aleix Garcia, Fernando, Sane; Navas, Iheanacho, Nolito.
    • 0'
Manchester United subs: Romero, Depay, Lingard, Young, Fellaini, Schneiderlin, Darmian.
    • 0'
Manchester United (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Valencia, Rojo, Blind, Shaw; Carrick, Herrera; Mata, Pogba, Rashford; Ibrahimovic.
    • 0'
Manchester City have not won in five games in all competitions and if they fail to beat United tonight, it will be Pep Guardiola's longest ever run without a victory in his career. The Citizens are level with Arsenal atop the Premier League table, with goal difference keeping them ahead.
    • 0'
Manchester United are still smarting after a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea in London which has left them six points off the top of the table. Jose Mourinho is already under pressure to turn things around at Old Trafford.
    • 0'
Hello and welcome to our live commentary of the EFL Cup fourth-round clash between Manchester United and Manchester City. Both sides are in need of a pick-me-up after a drop in form in recent weeks.
    • 1'
      Let's goooo!
    • 3'
CHANCE ALREADY! United nearly fell behind in the opening minutes for the second big game in a row, as Iheanacho has a free header inside the area after Navas delivered a peach of a ball. The home side are looking nervy here.
    • 5'
Mike Dean is the man in charge of things on the pitch tonight. It's his fourth Manchester derby, and City have won the last three. Ibrahimovic tries to free Rashford down the left but he's called for an offside.
    • 7'
Penny for Jose Mourinho's thoughts? The United manager is stooped on the touchline, conspicuously making notes in his pad, after a less-than-convincing beginning to the match from his side.
    • 9'
As you would expect, City are dominating the possession here, even with the game being played at Old Trafford. However, United are settling into it a little and preventing them from getting the space they enjoyed earlier.
    • 11'
Penalty? Aleix Garcia does well to beat Carrick inside the area, but he got his legs taken out from under him by the United midfielder. The referee does signal, but it's only for a goal kick to the hosts.
    • 13'
Iheanacho is an unlucky boy. He raced to get to a ball ahead of Blind, but lost his footing and clattered into the defender - completely accidental. However, he still gets booked.
    • 15'
Manchester United are having real trouble playing the ball out of the back as Rojo is pressured into another turnover by Navas out wide. Guardiola's pressing approach is working well.
    • 17'
City execute a lovely counter-attack after Herrera's pass is intercepted by Nolito. Some succinct pass-and-move football follows before Mata gets back to intercept what would have been a telling pass for the former Celta Vigo man.
    • 19'
Aleix Garcia has seen plenty of the ball early on and has generally used it well. City have just been lacking that final pass though to really penetrate into the United penalty area. Still goalless.
    • 21'
Iheanacho peeled away to the left side of the box, but Otamendi thought that he was continuing centrally, so clipped a pass through to that direction. De Gea makes the catch easily.
    • 23'
Ibrahimovic and Pogba link up before the Frenchman lays it off to Mata, who makes up his mind to shift left onto his favoured foot. He's tripped by Otamendi, earning a free-kick in a great position.
    • 25'
Ibrahimovic lines up the set-piece, but it's straight into the wall. United do win a corner though, but it's another wasteful attempt as Blind's delivery heads all the way to the other side of the field.
    • 26'
That was risky from Antonio Valencia, and it didn't pay off. A bouncing ball was chased by the Ecuadorian and Fernando, and the former flew in at full force, missing completely but taking a chunk out of the Brazilian. Yellow card.
    • 28'
This game has really slowed down here, with neither side able to gain the upper hand. Just under half-hour has gone at Old Trafford and I have no idea where the first goal is coming from.
    • 30'
Shaw attempts to scamper down the left-hand side but he's mopped up by a lovely tackle from Fernando, who has done really well protecting the defence against Pogba and others.
    • 33'
Both managers are prowling on the touchline, trying to give their side the edge in a closely contested battle. You get the feeling that City are still edging this, but United aren't as vulnerable as the opening minutes.
    • 35'
Manchester City spark forward on a counter-attack, and they've got four players in the opposition half. Aleix Garcia ruins it with a through pass that's behind Iheanacho, but ahead of Nolito.
    • 37'
OVER THE BAR! Closest that United have come, as Shaw plays a one-two with Rashford and surges down the left, cutting it back to Pogba, who then tees up Ibrahimovic for a blast that is off target.
    • 39'
BIG CHANCE! Ibrahimovic plays Rashford in down the blind side of Pablo Maffeo, and the young forward has Otamendi also struggling to keep his balance. However, he takes too long to make up his mind and the right-back recovers to block his finish.
    • 41'
Strong spell this from the home side, as Otamendi is forced to race out to his left flank to slide the ball away from Pogba. Moments later, Caballero gets a big paw onto a cross from Pogba to clear the danger.
    • 43'
DEFLECTED! Nolito has been quietly impressive leading the break for the visitors, and he plays in Iheanacho down the left side of the area, but his finish for the near post is blocked by Herrera!
    • 45'
Pablo Maffeo makes a commanding challenge to take Rashford out of the equation and end a United counter just as quickly as it started. There's been some more enterprise from both sides to end the half.
    • 46'
SI A. Kolarov SO V. Kompany
    • 46'
Kompany has been withdrawn for Kolarov. The Belgian didn't seem comfortable out there at times.
    • 46'
      Off we go again.
    • 48'
OOOOHHH SO CLOSE TO THE OPENER! Ibrahimovic's nimble feet and balance takes him past his man and opens up space for United in the final third. He plays in Pogba on the left, and the Frenchman's finish is touched onto the woodwork by Caballero!
    • 50'
United are definitely looking better in the second half, although they're indebted to some poor decision making from Iheanacho, as he waited too long to play in Nolito, who was caught offside.
    • 51'
I shouldn't be too harsh on Iheanacho though, who has managed four goals and three assists in his last nine City appearances.
    • 54'
      G Mata Assist V. Kompany
    • 54'
He was being bullied before that, but Ibrahimovic turned on the power switch for one crucial moment.
    • 54'
MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE THE OPENER! Ibrahimovic overpowers Otamendi when challenging for a high ball, and he advances down the left before poking a ball into the area. Herrera and Fernando both challenge for it and miss, leaving Mata to pick up the pieces with a sweeping finish!
    • 56'
United are playing with all sorts of confidence now after opening the scoring. Ibrahimovic spreads a pass down the line for Blind to chase, but his cross is too high for one of his teammates inside the area.
    • 58'
This, incidentally is the sixth game in a row that City have played where they've conceded first. They've failed to win the last five. Given the way the second half has gone, they have a lot of work to do to recover.
    • 60'
City wrangle some possession out of Unuted but they're really struggling to go anywhere with the ball. They're also left aggrieved after they feel that a few decisions by the referee went against them.
    • 62'
Well over the top. City pass and probe in the opposition half, but United keep the door shut. It ends when the substitute Kolarov tries to take matters into his own hands with a strike from another zip code that is sent into the sky.
    • 63'
SI R. Sterling SO V. Kompany
    • 63'
Sane is withdrawn and on comes Sterling. Boos all around.
    • 64'
CLOSE TO A SECOND! Rashford does well to skip past his man on the left flank, and then is even better when whipping in a terrific cross that's almost too good for Ibrahimovic, who doesn't adjust his feet in time for that would have been a sure-fire tap-in!
    • 66'
City win a free-kick just about in shooting range after Sterling was fouled, and it's left for Kolarov to take a pop on goal. However, he fails to trouble the keeper, as it's sent well off the mark.
    • 68'
The longer the second half has gone on, the more comfortable United look with a one-goal lead. You get the sense that they're happy to allow City to have the ball so that they can pick them off on the counter.
    • 70'
The previous meeting at this stadium about a month ago in the Premier League ended 2-1 to City. Guardiola would kill for that scoreline now, as he has 20 minutes to prevent going a career-worst six competitive games without a win.
    • 71'
SI S. Agüero SO V. Kompany
    • 71'
Sergio Aguero has been summoned to replace Nolito.
    • 72'
The home fans are loving this from their side. It's been pragmatic from the Red Devils and if they hold onto this win, suddenly the claims that Mourinho's conservatism is archaic won't be so loudly heard.
    • 73'
SI M. Schneiderlin SO V. Kompany
    • 73'
Schneiderlin is on and off goes Mata in Mourinho's first change.
    • 75'
This is the position Mourinho loves to be in as his side are sucking the life out of the clock. Every player bar Ibrahimovic is camped around their penalty area and they're frustrating City.
    • 77'
Aguero has barely touched the ball since coming on. Guardiola is out of substitutes, and it appears that his team is out of ideas as well. They've steadily got worse as the match has gone on.
    • 79'
Excellent play from Ibrahimovic to spin in traffic, keep a hold of the ball and release Rashford down the right. The latter's low cross for Pogba is cleared away from danger by Otamendi though.
    • 82'
SI J. Lingard SO V. Kompany
    • 82'
Rashford appearaed to be struggling there and he heads to the touchline to be immediately pulled off for Lingard, who was probably going to replace him anyway.
    • 84'
Six minutes stand between Manchester United and a place in the EFL Cup quarter-final. They've set up their defensive shape quite clearly to stifle the life out of City in the closing stages.
    • 86'
Manchester United have prevented City from getting a single shot on target. After the embarrassment against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, this is much more like a classic Mourinho performance.
    • 88'
City need something soon, but they're suffering from a lack of inspiration as they're forced to pass the ball backwards and sideways. Frustration is starting to seep in for the players on the pitch.
    • 90'
CABALLERO CALLED INTO ACTION! On the break, Pogba is clear of the defence and about to latch onto the ball at the top of the box, but the keeper off his line quickly to slide it clear.
    • 90'
Maffeo gets taken out by Pogba, who is sent into the referee's notebook. Ibrahimovic quickly follows him there after attempting to prevent City restarting the game from a free-kick.
    • 90'
Silly from the Swede, although you can't blame him for trying.
