    • KICK OFF
    • 45'
HT - Newcastle United 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur.
    • 0'
While Tottenham will look to build on this season, Newcastle face a number of changes over the summer ahead of a year in the Championship. That is all from St James' Park - goodbye!
    • 0'
In slightly more positive news for Tottenham, however, Harry Kane will take the Golden Boot. He did not score today, but neither did Jamie Vardy or Sergio Aguero.
    • 0'
For Tottenham, this long run of finishing behind Arsenal continues, as their rivals smashed Aston Villa 4-0. They end the season third.
    • 0'
Newcastle's players look glum, but there was little more they could have done today. They were superb from start to finish, unlike their opponents.
    • 0'
Georginio Wijnaldum got two, while Aleksandar Mitrovic, later sent off, Rolando Aarons and Daryl Janmaat got the others. Erik Lamela's consolation means little now.
    • 0'
Newcastle bow out with a bang. 5-1 winners against Tottenham, but they will head for the Championship, not the Champions League, next term.
    • 0'
As it stands, Arsenal are second on 71 points, leading Tottenham on 70 points. At the other end of the table, while it matters little, Newcastle remain above Norwich in 18th, as the Canaries are 2-0 behind at Everton.
    • 0'
Tottenham, meanwhile, are in real danger of losing second place to Arsenal. As they trail 2-0 at Newcastle, their rivals are 1-0 up against Aston Villa at the break. Spurs have been well off the pace so far.
    • 0'
Incidentally, Wijnaldum's goal makes him the first Newcastle midfielder to reach double figures since Kevin Nolan in the 2010-11 season. He, surely, will have suitors this summer though.
    • 0'
Georginio Wijnaldum, without a goal since January, broke his duck and the deadlock with a low prod, before Aleksandar Mitrovic's fearless header doubled the score.
    • 0'
Where did this come from? While Newcastle are unbeaten in five coming into this game, they have been sensational against sloppy Tottenham in the first half here.
    • 0'
France internationals Lloris and Sissoko, captains today, shake hands, and we will be underway shortly.
    • 0'
The teams are emerging from the tunnel! Newcastle in black and white, Tottenham in blue. Kick off is just minutes away.
    • 0'
However, that game was the fifth in a sequence of away wins in this fixture. Tottenham will hope to make that six today…
    • 0'
Benitez is also yet to lose in four home matches as Newcastle manager, with his side significantly better at St James' Park than on the road all season long. One of just two away wins came at White Hart Lane in December - Ayoze Perez downing Tottenham in stoppage time.
    • 0'
Despite their demotion, Newcastle come into this game in solid, if unspectacular, form. They are unbeaten in five, conceding just three along the way.
    • 0'
However, rather than the players, the men in the dugouts today have dominated the news this week. While Rafa Benitez is yet to commit to an extended stay on Tyneside, Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new deal at Tottenham.
    • 0'
With Dele Alli and Mousa Dembele both still missing through suspension for Tottenham, Ben Davies for Danny Rose is their only change.
    • 0'
Andros Townsend starts against his former side for Newcastle, who make three changes. Jamaal Lascelles is ill, replaced by Steven Taylor, and Vurnon Anita injured, allowing Daryl Janmaat to return. Meanwhile, Aleksandar Mitrovic is preferred to Papiss Cisse.
    • 0'
Subs: Vorm, Rose, Wimmer, Carroll, Chadli, Onomah, N’Jie.
    • 0'
Tottenham: Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Mason, Lamela, Eriksen, Son, Kane.
    • 0'
Subs: Woodman, Sterry, Shelvey, Aarons, De Jong, Perez, Cisse.
    • 0'
Newcastle: Darlow, Janmaat, Taylor, Mbemba, Dummett, Townsend, Tiote, Colback, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Mitrovic.
    • 0'
Tottenham still have plenty to play for though; a result here will secure second spot ahead of rivals Arsenal, while forward Harry Kane is chasing the Golden Boot. He is one ahead of Jamie Vardy and Sergio Aguero with 25 goals this season.
    • 0'
Newcastle are not the only disappointed party at St James' Park today, however; it could have been Tottenham that this time had title aspirations on the final day. Consecutive draws against West Brom and Chelsea instead handed Leicester the crown.
    • 0'
As in 2008-09, it was a below-par display and subsequent result at Villa Park that proved costly for Newcastle - with Sunderland's midweek rout against Everton condemning their great rivals.
    • 0'
Twenty years ago, Newcastle headed into their final game of the campaign at home to Tottenham with the Premier League title still a possibility. Today, they play their final top flight match before dropping into the Championship for the second time in seven seasons.

Hello and welcome to our live text commentary of Newcastle United versus Tottenham Hotspur on the last day of the Premier League season at St James' Park!
    • 1'
Tottenham get us underway, kicking from left to right, towards the Gallowgate End.
    • 2'
Tottenham have kept the ball well since kick-off, but their first attack comes to nothing as Walker's cross is charged down. Good start from the visitors.
    • 3'
Eriksen has the game's first effort, slicing wide from distance with a strike never likely to trouble Darlow. Great noise from the home support in favour of their manager, despite Wednesday's relegation.
    • 5'
And now Kane tries his luck from the right side of the Newcastle area. His attempt, though, was even wilder than Eriksen's.
    • 7'
With the opportunity to finish ahead of Arsenal, Tottenham look up for this early on. Newcastle are under immediate pressure when they gain possession.
    • 8'
Mitrovic will have to play a part for Newcastle to gain a result today. He is involved as Colback's shot balloons in the air, but heads tamely at Lloris.
    • 10'
And another effort from the big Serb. Wijnaldum and Townsend combine well to find Mitrovic, whose attempt ricochets kindly for Lloris.
    • 11'
CHANCE! A real sight of goal for Mitrovic now. Janmaat overlaps Townsend on the right, and the former Anderlecht front man stretches for the cross just yards from goal. Alderweireld, though, is across to throw himself into a challenge and deflect clear.
    • 12'
Townsend looks particularly eager to impress today against his boyhood club. He starts another attack, which ends up back at his feet and then high into the stands. A poor strike, but Newcastle and Townsend are showing promise now.
    • 15'
Given the home side's doomed status, there is a good pace to this game. Colback has twice broken up Tottenham moves with superb diving challenges in the last few moments.
    • 16'
The former Sunderland man is then bailed out by Mbemba, however. He lost the ball to Kane, missed the challenge, but had his teammate there to intercept. The Tottenham forward was almost in there.
    • 18'
But it is Newcastle who are on top at present. They are winning the tackles, even if their early running has led to little.
    • 19'
      G G. Wijnaldum Assist A. Mitrović
    • 19'
GOAL! And Newcastle have their reward! Janmaat's cross is headed by Alderweireld only as far as Sissoko. He teases a pass into Mitrovic, who in turn tees up Wijnaldum for a low finish into the corner. The Dutchman's 10th of the season and 10th at St James' Park.
    • 19'
      Assist Aleksandar Mitrović
    • 22'
Tottenham respond with some pressure, and Mbemba is again required to defend excellently. After Janmaat gave away a cheap corner, a second cross was missed by Taylor, leaving his centre-back partner to head and then block clear.
    • 24'
But back come Newcastle. A counter leads to some good possession on the edge of the Tottenham area, but Tiote, urged to shoot by the crowd, is heavy with his lofted pass and concedes a goal kick.
    • 27'
It may not have been an ideal opening period for visitors Tottenham, but the game has had a good flow to it until now, where a series of fouls break up play.
    • 30'
Half a chance for Newcastle. Townsend is again the architect, slipping in Colback, but he can only find the side-netting from wide on the right.
    • 31'
And now a flag flies over St James' Park, sent by Newcastle's rivals Sunderland. It reads "Auf Wiedersehen Prem, Tyne to go" - the locals, unsurprisingly, are unamused.
    • 32'
Had Newcastle performed to this level previously, such a banner might not have been possible. Mitrovic has another go, deflected through to Lloris.
    • 34'
Tottenham are still waiting for their first real opening, but Darlow is required to clutch Alderweireld's blast from distance. Newcastle remain on top.
    • 36'
Some probing has the sides win corners at either end, but Tottenham's breaks to Walker, who blazes high over the crossbar to the jeers of the Gallowgate.
    • 38'
Mitrovic is not happy as he is bundled to the ground by Davies. No free kick given, but the Serb is immediately in the ear of referee Anthony Taylor.
    • 39'
      G A. Mitrović Assist A. Mitrović
    • 39'
GOAL! He is happy now - and what a goal this is! Townsend again steams away down the right, playing in Sissoko to curl over a delightful cross. Mitrovic meets the ball with a thumping header into the net, before celebrating in typically aggressive fashion.
    • 39'
      Assist Moussa Sissoko
    • 40'
With the sound of that Auf Wiedersehen plane still humming above the stadium, Newcastle are 2-0 up against Tottenham. Unbelievable.
    • 42'
What a game Andros Townsend is having. With the England squad picked tomorrow, he is out to impress. A clipped centre into the middle is nodded up in the air by Alderweireld, and, eventually, Tottenham clear.
    • 44'
Newcastle are rampant here, and they are on for a home-and-away double against Tottenham - their first against any side this season.
    • 45'
CHANCE! Newcastle are thankful to their goalkeeper now, though. Kane slips in Eriksen on the overlap, but his firm strike is beaten away by Darlow at his near post. Great stop.
    • 46'
SI T. Carroll SO A. Mitrović
    • 46'
SI J. Onomah SO A. Mitrović
    • 46'
Mason, on a booking, is replaced by out-of-contract Carroll.
    • 46'
Young Onomah replaces the fairly anonymous Son.
    • 46'
Newcastle get us back underway against a slightly more youthful Tottenham lineup.
    • 47'
Newcastle are instantly back on top. They win a free kick on the right, and Townsend delivers, but the visitors scrap clear.
    • 48'
More pressure. Mitrovic gets a couple of opportunities to control in the area, eventually conceding a throw-in wide on the left after Tottenham edge the ball away.
    • 50'
Newcastle are still first to every loose ball, and Townsend and Sissoko have been ruthless in their running. Janmaat joins in too but cannot find room for a shot.
    • 51'
"Rafa Benitez, we want you to stay" roars the home crowd. Their support of the Spaniard has been incessant, today and previously.
    • 52'
Tottenham just cannot find their groove. They look a shadow of the destructive side on show all season. Walker, sloppy throughout, wastes a crossing opportunity with an overhit delivery on the right.
    • 55'
CHANCE! A nervy moment for Newcastle. They get bodies behind an extended passing move, and when Dier finally shoots, Tottenham want a penalty for handball. Instead, they get a corner, but Newcastle are able to clear and clear again.
    • 57'
So clumsy from Tiote, bumping into Kane and conceding a free kick just outside the area, centre of goal. Eriksen takes, but Mitrovic, inevitably, throws his head in the way. He needs a minute to recover.
    • 59'
CHANCE! Tottenham are well in this now. Davies gets in behind Janmaat and squares for Lamela. The Argentine, though, scuffs a shot straight at Darlow. A let-off for Newcastle.
    • 60'
      G E. Lamela Assist A. Mitrović
    • 60'
GOAL! Tottenham have their goal, gifted to them by Newcastle. First Tiote loses possession to Kane, he races away and, eventually, Lamela is left in the clear by Janmaat. The winger smashes straight at Darlow, but, this time, the home goalkeeper can only help a firm strike in off the crossbar.
    • 60'
      Assist Eric Dier
    • 62'
SI J. Shelvey SO A. Mitrović
    • 62'
Lamela is booked, clattering into former teammate Townsend, with the game back at a frantic pace once more.
    • 62'
Shelvey is introduced in Tiote's place. Will we see the Ivorian in a Newcastle shirt again?
    • 65'
CHANCE! Darlow does brilliantly to cling to Onomah's low blast. While Tiote had been struggling, there is now a gaping hole in the middle of Newcastle's midfield.
    • 67'
Mitrovic, superb up until now, is off! He attempts to shield the ball from Walker, but stamps into the England man's leg. After both players receive treatment, Anthony Taylor dismisses the Newcastle forward.
    • 69'
CHANCE! Tottenham smell blood. Eriksen collects possession just outside the area, and curls just over the bar. Darlow was scrambling across his goal there.
    • 71'
SI N. Chadli SO A. Mitrović
    • 71'
Walker, involved in the incident with Mitrovic, is booed off, and on comes Chadli.
    • 71'
Newcastle are camped in their own area, and almost create an equaliser for Tottenham. A low cross bobbles up for Mbemba to slice horribly behind for a corner.
    • 73'
GOAL! Just as Newcastle looked in real trouble, their lead is back at two. Sissoko races away down the left, cuts into the area and goes down under minimal contact. Anthony Taylor points to the spot, and, with Mitrovic off the pitch, Wijnaldum steps up to send Lloris the wrong way.
    • 76'
SI R. Aarons SO A. Mitrović
    • 76'
Just moments after adding his second of the afternoon and 11th of the season, Wijnaldum makes way for Aarons.
    • 77'
Tottenham still fancy this. Carroll rifles across the area, just ahead of Kane's dive, and Newcastle survive.
    • 79'
CHANCE! Newcastle are still playing without a natural centre forward, but Sissoko is more than making up for that. He goes on another lung-busting run, cuts inside and curls towards goal. Lloris gets up brilliantly to deny him with a super save.
    • 80'
CHANCE! Townsend is desperate for a goal! After pleading with Wijnaldum to take the penalty, he accelerates clear to shoot on the right, but finds Lloris' hands.
    • 81'
CHANCE! Newcastle are just so dangerous on the counter. Sissoko, this time, sprints forward, cuts inside and lashes a left-footed drive just past the post. The hosts have been magnificent this afternoon.
    • 83'
CHANCE! How has Sissoko not scored? Another breakaway, and Townsend plays him in. The Frenchman, though, shoots low at Lloris, who blocks well. Sensational.
    • 84'
SI J. Sterry SO A. Mitrović
    • 84'
CHANCE! Townsend cuts inside, and, on his weaker right, curls towards the far corner. Unbelievably, he strikes the post.
    • 84'
Sissoko now makes his way off, handing the captain's armband to Shelvey. It's a debut for young Sterry.
    • 85'
      G R. Aarons Assist A. Mitrović
    • 85'
Aarons is booked for an emphatic celebration in the crowd.
    • 85'
GOAL! This is a rout! Tottenham switch off after Townsend's curler, and Aarons finds space to smash a stunning strike into the net.
    • 85'
      Assist Daryl Janmaat
    • 86'
      G D. Janmaat Assist A. Mitrović
    • 86'
GOAL! 10-man Newcastle have five! Incredible. Tottenham are all at sea, giving Janmaat room to gallop forward and roll in a finish.
    • 86'
      Assist Rolando Aarons
    • 89'
Tottenham are playing like the team with 10 men. There are gaps everywhere, and their attacks lack the ruthlessness shown by their hosts. Newcastle's supporters are loving this!
    • 90'
FT - Newcastle United 5-1 Tottenham Hotspur.
    • 45'
A straight forward yellow card for Mason as he trips Mitrovic on the halfway line. Tottenham look a little shaken.
    • 90'
CHANCE! Kane, hunting that Golden Boot, controls inside of Janmaat, but hits the post with his low shot. So close to his 26th of the campaign.
    • 90'
Townsend, still hunting a goal against his former club, continues to chase everything. Tottenham have the ball now, but they will not finish above Arsenal.
