That's all for this afternoon. Thank you for following the LIVE text commentary of the Barclays Premier League - hope you've enjoyed it. Until next time, have a very good evening!

Nothing could separate the two sides during an entertaining afternoon at Villa Park. Jordan Ayew's penalty cancelled out Aaron Cresswell's first-half effort but, in the end, a point is not what either team would have wanted. West Ham are now without a win in eight, while Villa have gone 17 without o

FULL TIME: ASTON VILLA 1-1 WEST HAM UNITED
    • 0'
The players are making their way back out onto the pitch and the second half is about to get underway.
    • 0'
Villa cannot afford to let their heads drop too much after falling behind just before the break. Remi Garde faces a big team talk and needs to get it spot on for his players.
    • 0'
Aaron Cresswell's stoppage-time strike is the difference between the two sides at the break. That was West Ham's first goal in four games and it came courtesy of the man who has played in every Premier League game this season.

HALF TIME: ASTON VILLA 0-1 WEST HAM UNITED
    • 0'
HERE THEY COME! The teams are making their way out onto the field and kick off is just moments away.
    • 0'
WEST HAM SUBS: Randolph, Hendrie, Jenkinson, Song, Oxford, Cullen, Parfitt-Williams.
    • 0'
WEST HAM (4-2-3-1): Adrian; Tomkins, Collins, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Obiang, Kouyate; Antonio, Noble, Zarate; Valencia.
    • 0'
West Ham's last three games have seen them play out consecutive goalless draws. Slaven Bilic makes two changes from the stalemate at Swansea as he looks to stop the rot. Pedro Obiang comes into midfield in place of Alex Song, while Enner Valencia replaces Nikica Jelavic up front.
    • 0'
VILLA SUBS: Bunn, Clark, Gil, Traore, Richardson, Grealish, Sinclair.
    • 0'
VILLA (4-3-1-2): Guzan; Hutton, Okore, Lescott, Bacuna; Westwood, Sanchez, Gueye; Veretout; Gestede, Ayew.
    • 0'
Villa showed good character to earn a draw at Newcastle last weekend. Remi Garde makes just a single change to that side as he continues his quest for a first win in charge, with Rudy Gestede replacing Scott Sinclair up front. Micah Richards, Gary Gardner and Jordan Arnavi remain on the sidelines.
    • 0'
It is a difficult game to call this afternoon. Bottom club Villa are without a win since the opening day of the season, while eighth-placed West Ham are searching for a first victory in eight.
    • 0'
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to LIVE text commentary of the Barclays Premier League. We're at Villa Park as Aston Villa take on West Ham United in a Boxing Day battle of the Claret and Blue sides.
    • 1'
KICK OFF! Referee Mike Dean blows his whistle and Villa get the ball rolling this afternoon.
    • 3'
West Ham make a bright start to the game as they force a couple of early corners. There is slight pause before the second delivery, however, as Tomkins receives attention to a gash under his eye following a clash of heads with Hutton.
    • 4'
The corner is eventually swung in and Kouyate beats Sanchez to the ball, but cannot direct his header towards goal.
    • 5'
The visitors continue to be in top in these early stages. Antonio gets into the area and drills the ball across the area, but there is nobody in there for the Hammers and Sanchez clears.
    • 7'
After receiving lengthy attention on the sidelines, Tomkins is finally back on the pitch with heavy bandaging around his wound. The last thing West Ham need is another injury.
    • 9'
West Ham will be pleased with their start at Villa Park. They have not enjoyed too much success here in recent years, winning just one of their last eight visits.
    • 11'
Bacuna is the first player to have his name taken by Mr Dean this afternoon, as he commits a professional foul with West Ham launching a quick counter attack.
    • 12'
Ogbonna is the next player to go into the book for a foul during that Villa counter attack.
    • 13'
A strong counter attack from Villa sees them awarded a corner. They are unable to take advantage, though, as Gestede is ruled offside.
    • 15'
Villa are slowly playing their way into this contest and the fans are responding to the efforts of their players. The hosts need to keep this up.
    • 17'
JUST WIDE! The hosts continue to build up momentum. A dangerous cross into the West Ham area is met by Gestede, but he cannot direct his header towards goal.
    • 19'
These are all positive signs for Garde as he aims to keep Villa in the Premier League. What will fill them with comfort, however, is the fact that the team bottom of the Premier League in the last two seasons have gone on to complete a great escape.
    • 21'
Hutton finds himself in space on the right and delivers a teasing cross that is met by Gestede, but Obiang does just about enough to deflect his header behind for a corner.
    • 23'
Like West Ham, Villa are out to upset the history books here this afternoon. They have won just one of their last 14 fixtures on Boxing Day.
    • 25'
GOOD SAVE! Things suddenly open up for Zarate as the Villa defence back off. His shot is creeping into the near corner, but Guzan gets down well to push his shot away.
    • 27'
GOOD DEFENDING! Gueye embarks on a strong run down the left and looks to pick out Westwood at the far post, but Ogbonna reads the situation well to make a vital interception.
    • 28'
GOOD SAVE! Bacuna cuts inside onto his right foot before firing a shot that is well saved by Adrian, who is quickly up to gather Gestede's follow-up header.
    • 30'
As we pass the half-hour mark, it is difficult to choose the better side so far. Both teams are playing well and looking good going forward. We are just missing a goal.
    • 32'
Villa are enjoying a lot more of the possession at the moment. They are enjoying some nice spells of possession, but just need a bit more creativity in the final third.
    • 34'
Interestingly, Villa's last home win in the Premier League came against West Ham towards the end of last season. Tom Cleverley scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory.
    • 36'
SHOOT! A sharp burst from Kouyate sets up a dangerous attack for West Ham. He feeds the ball into Antonio, but the winger looks to cut back onto his right foot rather than get his shot away and Villa clear.
    • 38'
SI Carles Gil SO C. Sánchez
    • 38'
Sanchez goes down and immediately signals to the bench that he is unable to continue. Carles Gil comes on in his place.
    • 40'
The change has slowed the pace of the game down a little as we enter the last five minutes of this first half. Now would be a good time for either side to break the deadlock.
    • 42'
If this scoreline remains the same, West Ham would become just the fourth team in Premier League history to record four consecutive 0-0 draws. It certainly looks like it will remain that way at half time anyway.
    • 43'
Antonio finds some space on the left and gets his shot away, but catches it all wrong and sees his effort go flying into the stands.
    • 44'
At the other end, Gil gets a quick shot away on the volley that flashes wide of the near post. It certainly caught Adrian by surprise, but was nowhere near the target.
    • 46'
SI C. Jenkinson SO C. Sánchez
    • 46'
West Ham make a change at the break, as Carl Jenkinson comes on in place of Tomkins.
    • 46'
KICK OFF! The referee blows his whistle and West Ham get the ball rolling once again.
    • 48'
Gestede flashes a dangerous ball across the area, but Jenkinson does well as he prevents Ayew from surely turning it home at the far post.
    • 50'
CHANCE! Villa put a neat spell of play together and Gestede meets Hutton's cross but, once again, is unable to keep his header down. He has to take those kind of opportunities.
    • 52'
Okore puts Villa under the cosh as he slices his clearance out for a throw-in. A free kick is subsequently awarded for West Ham, but Guzan relieves the pressure by gathering his delivery.
    • 53'
GOOD EFFORT! Veretout darts into the area and unleashes a powerful effort that is heading for the far corner, but Adrian gets down well to tip the ball around the post.
    • 55'
Westwood is the next player to try his luck for Villa with an ambitious effort from distance. It is never going to trouble Adrian, however, as it drifts way high of the target.
    • 57'
Zarate whips in another dangerous free-kick delivery from near the corner flag. Collins evades his marker to meet it, but is unable to keep his header down.
    • 58'
Collins is the next player to have his name taken by the referee.
    • 59'
GOOD SAVE! Gestede controls Westwood's free kick in the area and gets his shot away, but Adrian is alert to beat the ball away.
    • 61'
PENALTY TO VILLA! Gestede chases a long ball in behind the defence and goes down under a challenge from Ogbonna. Mike Dean shows no hesitation in pointing to the spot. What a chance this is...
    • 62'
VERY CALMLY DONE!!! Ayew steps up and shows so much composure, as he sends Adrian the wrong way and dispatches his kick into the roof of the net.
    • 64'
That has given Villa a lot of hope. They can close the gap on 19th-placed Sunderland to just two points with a win, providing the Black Cats lose at Manchester City.
    • 66'
The Holte End is rocking as Villa force a corner. Some more good play results in Bacuna's cross deflecting behind off Collins. These are all very positive signs for the hosts.
    • 68'
Nothing can separate the two sides at the moment. With both teams looking for victory to end long winless runs, whose determination will shine through in the final quarter of this game.
    • 70'
VITAL BLOCK! Whether he knew much about it or not remains to be seen, but Bacuna is in the right place at the right time to block Noble's goalbound volley.
    • 71'
CLOSE! Gil's corner flashes across the area and is only half-cleared by Antonio to Westwood, whose volley is not too far over the crossbar in the end.
    • 73'
This is good pressure from Villa. West Ham are being pegged back inside their own half and need to continue being stubborn if they are to fight off the tide.
    • 74'
Kouyaté goes into the book following a late challenge on Hutton. Villa have a free kick in a good position, here.
    • 75'
SI A. Song SO C. Sánchez
    • 75'
West Ham make another change with Cresswell making way in place of Alexandre Song.
    • 75'
CLOSE! The free kick is floated into the box and eventually comes to Hutton at the far post. His header is very well kept out, however, by good reflexes from Adrian.
    • 77'
Villa can be pleased with their efforts at the moment, but they need to turn this pressure into a potential winning goal. They do not want to rue their failure to not capitalise on their dominance.
    • 78'
Hutton is booked for Villa for a foul on Antonio near the far touchline. He is walking a tightrope for the remainder of this game.
    • 80'
We are into the final 10 minutes at Villa Park. The home fans are trying to get behind their team, who will take three points from absolutely anywhere. West Ham are looking capable on the counter, however.
    • 82'
Westwood looks for Hutton in behind the West Ham defence with a searching long ball, but Ogbonna reads the danger well and clears.
    • 83'
SI Adama Traoré SO C. Sánchez
    • 83'
Another change for Villa sees Adama Traoré thrown into the action, as Veretout makes way.
    • 85'
SI R. Oxford SO C. Sánchez
    • 85'
West Ham make their final change of the afternoon, as 17-year-old Reece Oxford comes on in place of Zarate.
    • 87'
A mistake by Okore almost put Villa under the cosh, as Antonio raced onto the ball but was stopped in his tracks by the offside flag.
    • 89'
We are into the final minute of the 90 and still both sides are searching for a dramatic winner. Villa are looking the more likely as they continue to apply pressure, but need to turn it into a goal.
    • 90'
Gestede clears the subsequent corner and the referee blows for full time.
    • PENALTY SHOOTOUT
    • 45'
With that, the referee blows his whistle and brings the first half to a close.
    • 90'
GOOD SAVE! Valencia looks to catch Guzan out with a low free kick, but the Villa keeper is equal to the delivery and pushes it away.
    • 45'
Villa look to respond with Hutton whipping a cross over from the right, but Adrian is alert as he comes to collect easily.
    • 90'
A good driving run from Antonio draws Villa into conceding a free kick 30 yards from goal. This would be a heart breaker for the hosts if West Ham stole the points here.
    • EXTRA TIME
    • 90'
NO PENALTY?! Song looks to thread the ball into the area and sees it come off the arm of Westwood. The referee is unmoved, however, and the play goes on.
    • HALF TIME
    • 45'
      G A. Cresswell Assist C. Sánchez
    • 45'
Antonio found Cresswell, who had acres of space to line up the shot.
    • 45'
WHAT A STRIKE!!! Cresswell gives West Ham the lead in stoppage time! He finds himself in space during a Hammers break, before drilling a wonderful effort into the far corner leaving Guzan with no chance.
    • 90'
We are into the second of four added minutes at the end of this game. Will one winless streak be broken or will the rot continue for both sides?
    • 45'
OFF THE BAR! Kouyate beats the offside trap and reacts quickly to latch onto Valencia's deflected effort, but sees his header clip the top of the crossbar.
    • 90'
ATTACK! Bacuna produces such an inviting delivery from his free kick, but not one of his team mates attack the ball and it runs behind for a goal kick. What a waste!
