A Ross Barkley-inspired performance sees Everton heap more misery on strugglers Aston Villa in a comfortable 4-0 win at Goodison Park. The England international scores two goals and sets up another to inflict a first defeat on new Villans boss RemI Garde.

Barkley has had a say in all three goals as his quick feet have caused Villa so many problems. Garde’s men have offered no threat up front so far this afternoon and it’ll be interesting to see how they approach this second period.

The Toffees are three nil to the good as both sides head down the tunnel for the half-time interval at Goodison Park. Villa defended well as a unit for the first 15 minutes but Barkley has turned the game around since.

After holding Manchester City to a stalemate, Garde makes three swaps from that team. Keiran Richardson, Ashley Westwood and Jack Grealish are all back in the side at the expense of Jordan Amavi, Scott Sinclair and Carlos Sanchez.

Roberto Martinez names an unchanged lineup from the one that drew 1-1 at West Ham last time out. Top scorer Romelu Lukaku continues to lead the line, but Tom Cleverly is only fit enough to start amongst the substitutes. Ramiro Funes Mori partners John Stones at the back.

However, they will still fancy their chances against a team that have won only a solitary game all season. Aston Villa currently prop up the standings, losing a league-high nine of their opening 12 games. Remi Garde takes charge of his second league match at the helm of the Villains, after securing

Everton currently sit in ninth place, but can jump as high as seventh with a win here today. However, such a result is far from a foregone conclusion - they've taken maximum points only twice at Goodison Park this season. Only West Brom (12) have conceded more than their 11 goals at home this season

It’s still all Everton at the moment in terms of possession but Veretout has started to press their backline in the last few seconds, rather than just staying deep in midfield, to keep the hosts back in their own half.

GOOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLL!! It’s 1-0 to Everton! Deulofeu collects a pass from McCarthy down the right-hand side and plays a flat cross towards Kone which Guzan diverts to the side, and allows Barkley to tap home from close range unmarked. What a team goal that was from the Toffees.

Villa had done well to keep Everton at bay for a good amount of time but that goal early in the first half will now force them to open up a bit more, playing right into the hands of the hosts.
    • 21'
Gil receives the ball to feet after originally playing a corner which Funes Mori cleared, and drives a low cross towards the six-yard box but Howard comes off his line slightly and collects with ease.

Villa have lost their rigid shape all of a sudden and Everton are picking holes in their backline too often and too easily at the moment. Grealish needs to get back and support Richardson more.

Villa are now conceding too much space in their own half as the midfield tries to push for a goal and that leaves gaps between them and the defence. Everton are exploiting that to a tee at the moment.
