League Cup
White Hart Lane
Attendance 35,323

    • KICK OFF
    • 45'
That's it for the first half.
    • 90'
The referee blows his whistle and it's advantage Tottenham!
    • 45'
Dier rises in the area once more to flick on Townsend's whipped-in free kick, but his header drifts wide of the target on this occasion - watched all the way by Howard.
    • 90'
Poor execution from Murphy. Baxter pulls the ball back for him on the corner of the area and he tried to curl an effort around Vorm, but hit it wrong and saw it arrow wide of the post.
    • 0'
And that's all from White Hart Lane this evening. Hope you've enjoyed following the LIVE action. I've been Jonathan Davies - farewell until next time!
    • 0'
Andros Townsend's 74th-minute penalty is enough to give Tottenham a 1-0 lead going into the second leg at Bramall Lane next Wednesday. United will be satisfied with the result and they are still very much in the tie.

    • 0'
The teams are back out and the second half is imminent.
    • 0'
It will be interesting to see how Spurs begin this second half after Pochettino's influence. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to reach a major cup final and potentially get back in among the trophies.
    • 0'
We're goalless at the halfway point of this League Cup semi-final first leg. Sheffield United will take that without batting an eyelid against the side who are 45 league places higher than them.
    • 0'
    • 0'
The teams are out and kick off is upon us. Neil Swarbrick is our referee this evening and it is his third straight appointment in the capital, having taken charge of QPR's defeat to Man United on Saturday and West Ham's dramatic FA Cup penalty shootout victory over Everton last week.
    • 0'
Tottenham might well be heavy favourites to progress to the final, but they will not be taking their League One opponents very lightly at all. Sheffield United have knocked five Premier League sides out of cup competitions over the last 12 months, including Aston Villa and Fulham during their run to

The teams are in and Mauricio Pochettino has made five changes to the Spurs side that beat Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday. Emmanuel Adebayor leads the attack for the first time since November and there are starts for Andros Townsend, Ryan Mason and Ben Davies, while Michel Vorm starts

There will be a delay to the previously scheduled 7.45pm (GMT) kick off. The Sheffield United team bus is stuck in traffic and we are expecting the match to get underway between 8.00 and 8.15pm (GMT). We'll bring you more as we hear it.

Good evening and welcome to LIVE text commentary of the League Cup. It's the first leg of the semi-final as Tottenham Hotspur and Sheffield United look to gain the advantage. I'm Jonathan Davies and I'll be guiding you through the action.
    • 1'
WE'RE OFF! The referee blows his whistle and Sheffield United get us underway!
    • 3'
United have started in a very positive manner. They have had the ball in Tottenham's half and will be relishing every opportunity to go forward.
    • 4'
Flynn is next to push forward for the blades. He skips between Vertonghen and Mason in the area, but Vorm is out sharply to gather. They need to keep doing this!
    • 6'
This competition has provided Spurs' only pieces of silverware in the last 24 years - in 1999 and 2008. They have also won both previous meetings between the sides in the League Cup, which came in 1970 and 1990.
    • 8'
United's hearts will have been in their mouths there, as the corner bounced kindly for Kane. McEveley reacted quickly though to clear and deny the player who has scored in every round this year.
    • 10'
All of Spurs' League Cup matches this season have come at White Hart Lane. They beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 in the last 32, before overcoming Brighton 2-0 in the last 16 and Newcastle 4-0 in the quarter-finals.
    • 12'
It's fair to say that they do enjoy having home comfort. They are currently unbeaten in their last nine matches here in all competitions, and have won all three in 2015 so far.
    • 13'
McNulty has his first sight at goal. He is the Blades' top scorer in all competitions this season and Spurs will have been worried for a split second, but the defence is able to snuff him out on this occasion.
    • 15'
Spurs are wearing black armbands this evening as a mark of respect to their team mate Nacer Chadli, whose father passed away suddenly in the last 48 hours.
    • 17'
      E. Adebayor gets yellow.
    • 17'
Adebayor can count himself lucky. He catches Reed in the face with his arm and the United bench are livid. Referee Neil Swarbrick shows a yellow card to the Spurs skipper. It did appear that contact was accidental, but we have seen red cards given for less in the past.
    • 19'
This is the 90th meeting between the sides but you have to go back to the last time United were in the Premier League for their last one. The Blades were 2-1 winners at Bramall Lane in February 2007.
    • 21'
Nervy times for the visitors as Townsend runs at Harris and goes down after contact is made, but the England winger did run into the left back as opposed to being tripped. The referee rightly waves away any appeals.
    • 22'
Campbell-Ryce gets the ball on the right hand side and fizzes it across the face of goal, but it goes just past the far post. The slightest possible touch was needed to put the visitors in front.
    • 24'
GREAT SAVE FROM HOWARD! Townsend whips in a free kick which is guided towards goal by Dier, but the Blades keeper is alert to push the ball away - either side of him and it's 1-0 Tottenham.
    • 26'
This is the sides' first meeting in eight years and just their 13th since January 1978. The last 12 encounters are shared equally with four wins apiece and four draws.
    • 28'
The Sheffield United fans are rightly taking every bit of this experience into their stride. Each of their side's successful passes is greeted with an 'Ole!' as they enjoy a nice spell of possession.
    • 30'
Campbell-Ryce is having a lot of joy down the right hand side at the moment. He began his career in the capital at Charlton Athletic, but has been somewhat of a journeyman around the football league. He will be looking to seize the opportunity this evening.
    • 32'
The Blades are having a decent league campaign to compliment their cup exploits. They are currently seventh in League One and have a game in hand on Rochdale and Bradford in fifth and sixth place respectively.
    • 34'
ADEBAYOR SHOULD DO BETTER! A long ball over the top and the striker finds himself one-on-one with McEveley, who does well to put him off as he fires over from inside the box.
    • 36'
Along with West Ham and Southampton, United have also beaten Mansfield Town, Leyton Orient and MK Dons to earn their place in the semi-finals.
    • 38'
You can take nothing away from them so far this evening. They are holding their own and look dangerous going forward, while remaining equally as stubborn at the back when Spurs do threaten them.
    • 39'
CHANCE FOR SCOUGALL! A mistake from Davies is pounced on by Reed, who lays the ball off for Scougall on the edge of the area. His effort has the power but is quite a way off the target.
    • 41'
We have a break in play as Murphy is down and being treated for a nosebleed. It was accidental as he got caught underneath an aerial challenge between Harris and Walker.
    • 43'
Walker will be having incredibly mixed feelings tonight against the side who sold him to Spurs, along with Kyle Naughton, for a combined fee of £9 million back in 2009.
    • 45'
We are going to have two minutes of stoppage time at the end of this first half.
    • 46'
Spurs get us going once more!
    • 48'
Sweeping counter attack from the Blades. McNulty holds the ball up well and feeds Murphy out on the left, and he draws a corner from Walker's block.
    • 50'
Townsend makes a horizontal run to latch onto Eriksen's chipped through ball, but he will be fairly relieved to have been ruled offside as his shot was well wide of the target.
    • 52'
A very loose backpass from the Sheffield United midfield cannot be kept from going behind for a goal kick by Howard. Spurs do not make anything of the unexpected corner though.
    • 54'
Adebayor is penalised for pulling back McEveley and is told to calm down by Mr Swarbrick. He is walking a tightrope and one more rash challenge will surely see him receive a second yellow card.
    • 55'
      J. McEveley is yellow-carded.
    • 56'
Spurs are still struggling to create any opportunities for the breakthrough here. The Blades are in decent form on the road though, having lost just two of their last nine away from Bramall Lane.
    • 58'
There appears to be activity on the Tottenham bench as Roberto Soldado and Moussa Dembele are warming up. The Spaniard will be one of six players to appear in every round for Spurs, along with Vorm, Vertonghen, Stambouli, Townsend and Kane.
    • 60'
Very dangerous from Stambouli as he looks to play his way out of a tight area, and is intercepted by Murphy who goes on to force a corner off Dier.
    • 63'
The groans roar around White Hart Lane as Eriksen plays a short corner and gets the ball back from Adebayor, but his cross is way too high and the fans' frustration is evident.
    • 64'
Spurs are going to make those changes and Adebayor is going off to a mixed reception, and will be replaced by Soldado. Mason is the man to give way for Dembele.
    • 65'
SI M. Dembélé SO R. Mason
    • 65'
      SI Soldado SO R. Mason
    • 65'
      E. Adebayor is done for the day. Soldado is his replacement.
    • 65'
      R. Mason is replaced with M. Dembélé.
    • 66'
United memorably gave Liverpool a huge fright at this stage back in 2003, when they took a 2-1 lead into the second leg at Anfield. It took an extra-time winner from Michael Owen to eventually send the Reds through.
    • 68'
The Blades also reached the last four of the FA Cup that season, where it took a Freddie Ljungberg goal and world-class David Seaman save to eventually put them to the sword.
    • 70'
We're into the final 20 minutes now. Can Sheffield United maintain their current performance levels against a side who have made late goals their trademark this season?
    • 72'
Another edgy moment from the League One side as Howard once again has to be alert to race out of goal and clear another loose backpass. They need to be strong and solid now.
    • 73'
PENALTY TO TOTTENHAM! Vertonghen's ball into the box is well controlled by Soldado and McEveley handles, leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot.
    • 74'
GOAL TO TOTTENHAM - TOWNSEND!! The England winger steps up and, although Howard gets his hand to it, there is another power on it to give Spurs the lead. It is damage limitation now for the Blades.
    • 75'
      SI Paulinho SO R. Mason
    • 75'
      B. Stambouli is replaced with Paulinho.
    • 75'
Spurs have their tails up now. Townsend goes down the right and whips in a dangerous cross, but Basham positions himself well and clear the ball to safety.
    • 77'
McEveley will be hoping he does not rue that momentary lapse in concentration. It was very unlucky but you simply cannot afford any slip-ups like that against Premier League opposition.
    • 79'
The centre back is doing his best to make amends as he gets his head on Harris' flighted free kick, but he cannot direct the ball towards goal as it floats wide.
    • 81'
Very good defending from Basham. Kane embarks on a strong run from the halfway line, drifting in from the left but the United man uses his strength to shield the ball out of play.
    • 83'
SI J. Baxter SO R. Mason
    • 83'
      J. Baxter comes on for M. McNulty.
    • 83'
Seven minutes to play here and Clough is making his first change of the night, as he throws on Jose Baxter in search of a goal with McNulty making way.
    • 85'
Another option for United may be to use Charlie Higdon. It would offer them another striking option and he already has three goals in this competition.
    • 86'
Deep cross from Campbell-Ryce over on the right looking for Baxter, but he cannot stretch far enough to hook the ball back towards goal.
    • 87'
SI K. Wallace SO R. Mason
    • 87'
      S. Scougall is replaced with K. Wallace.
    • 87'
United are making their second change and Kieran Wallace is going to come on in place of Scougall. The visitors need to go for it now but, at the same time, ensure that they remain tight at the back.
    • 89'
What an important touch from Walker! Some superb work from Campbell-Ryce on the right before Flynn delivers a deep cross, and Walker gets enough on the ball to flick it away with Murphy waiting to pounce.
    • 90'
We're going to have three minutes of stoppage time at the end of this first leg.
