WHAT A MISS FROM MARKOVIC! Downing gives the ball away on the edge of his own area and Markovic is on it in a flash. With the goal at his mercy though, he can't hit the target! Big chance gone!
    • 90'
The referee blows his whistle and Liverpool have the three points!
    • 90'
O'Brien heads in for West Ham but Mr Marriner had already blown for a foul on Mignolet. It looks like Liverpool are going to extend their run to just one defeat in the last 14 matches he has taken charge of.
    • 45'
Prior to that, Sterling definitely had a decent penalty appeal. O'Brien was all over him but the referee was having none of it and swiftly blows for the end of the first half.
    • 90'
      R. Sterling gets yellow.
    • 90'
Downing chips a free kick into the box but it is dealt with by Liverpool without too much difficulty. Along with Carroll, he is another player who will have wanted to make an impact today after also enduring a tough time at Anfield.

And that's it for this afternoon. Hope you've enjoyed following the LIVE action from Anfield. I've been Jonathan Davies and until next time - have a very good evening!

Daniel Sturridge took just 12 minutes to mark his comeback from injury in the way that he knows best. His goal killed off any chance for West Ham after Raheem Sterling had put Liverpool ahead six minutes into the second half.

The teams are back out again and ready to get going in the second half.

Elsewhere in the Premier League so far, Manchester United are 3-0 up and cruising at home against Leicester while Tottenham are 2-0 to the good at West Brom. Sunderland lead Burnley by the same scoreline, Stoke are 2-1 up against QPR and Everton are a goal to the good at Crystal Palace.
    • 0'
Goalless at the break, though Liverpool really should be heading in a goal to the good. They could have had a penalty for the Sterling incident but there is no doubt that Markovic should have scored afterwards.

The teams are out and kick off is fast approaching.

Liverpool aren’t in bad form – their defeat at Chelsea in midweek was their first in 11 games. West Ham have only lost three of their last 19, but are looking for their first win at Anfield in the Premier League.
    • 0'
It is eighth against seventh today with both sides looking to move up to sixth and put pressure on Arsenal in the UEFA Europa League spot.

The teams are in and Daniel Sturridge returns to the bench, but there is no Steven Gerrard or Mario Balotelli in the Liverpool squad today. Adam Lallana starts in the only change from the side that were beaten by Chelsea in the League Cup on Tuesday. West Ham’s big news also comes off the field as 1

Good afternoon and welcome to LIVE text commentary from the Barclays Premier League. We’re at Anfield today as Liverpool take on West Ham United. I’m Jonathan Davies and I’ll be guiding you through the action.
    • 1'
WE'RE OFF! Liverpool get us underway!
    • 3'
All the stats are very much in Liverpool's favour for this one. They have only lost three times at Anfield all season to Aston Villa, Real Madrid and Chelsea.
    • 4'
We have a break in play here as Can goes down under a challenge from Carroll. Replays show the England striker caught the centre half with an elbow. I think that's called "letting him know you're there!"
    • 6'
End to end stuff here. Liverpool clear O'Brien's ball into the box at one end before Collins makes a block to deny Markovic at the other.
    • 8'
West Ham have a free kick after Can upended Valencia on the left. Liverpool deal with it easily though and break away before Lallana tries his luck but sends the ball high into the stands.
    • 10'
It has been a very open start to this game inside the first 10 minutes. Both sides are going for it and look dangerous going forward.
    • 12'
Valencia and Can have a race to get on the end of Song's through ball, but Mignolet is off his line very quickly and is able to smother it just inside the area.
    • 14'
This is the 129th meeting between the sides in all competitions. Liverpool have won 69 of them to West Ham's 25. Their Premier League head-to-head record is equally dominant with the Reds leading 24-7.
    • 16'
Lallana steals possession from Cresswell and runs at the defence before his shot is blocked by Reid. Liverpool claim handball but referee Andre Marriner is unmoved.
    • 18'
Valencia sends his free kick into the wall but West Ham keep the opportunity alive as they float the ball back into the box, before Nolan's volley is deflected behind.
    • 19'
STRAIGHT AT THE GOALKEEPER! Sterling steals the ball and he lays it off for Henderson but he cannot place his effort either side of Adrian - could have been 1-0 otherwise.
    • 22'
A bit of argy bargy between Downing and Markovic down by the corner flag. It's nothing major though and both players just get a stern talking to by the referee.
    • 24'
GOOD SAVE BY ADRIAN! Some lovely link up play by Liverpool just inside the area sees Coutinho cut inside and shoot, but the West Ham keeper gets down well to palm the ball away.
    • 26'
Carroll gets his head on Downing's corner but cannot direct the ball towards goal. He will be desperate to impress this afternoon at the place where he endrured a very difficult two years.
    • 28'
There appears to be activity on the West Ham bench as Collins looks to be struggling out there. Guy Demel will be the likely replacement but another defensive injury is not what West Ham want, with James Tomkins already on the sidelines.
    • 30'
Well it certainly seemed like there was going to be a change but Collins has just signalled to the bench that he will be OK to continue. Sam Allardyce will be relieved.
    • 32'
Carroll really has to be careful with his arms! This time he catches Markovic with a swinging elbow. It wasn't spotted again though by the referee - that's the second one he's done today.
    • 34'
West Ham look dangerous from set pieces. They send plenty of height into the box with the likes of Carroll and Collins, but they are yet to really capitalise on their height advantage so far.
    • 36'
At the other end, Collins' defensive qualities serve him well as he reads Coutinho's intended through ball for Sterling and manages to cut it out.
    • 38'
Henderson does look like a natural successor to Gerrard in the centre of midfield and potentially as captain. He needs to work on his free kick ability though - he just sent one straight into the wall from 25 yards.
    • 39'
Adrian is lucky he wasn't spotted there! He clawed the ball away from Coutinho, but kicked out at the Brazilian after he appeared to be accidentally caught. If the referee sees that, he's off.
    • 42'
We're approaching the final stages of the first half and both sides have produced decent performances so far. They need to offer more in attack though and make the most of their chances. Sturridge will be eager to make a difference from the bench!
    • 45'
We're going to have just a single minute of stoppage time.
    • 46'
HERE WE GO! West Ham kick us off once more.
    • 48'
Wasted from Moreno! Sterling sat the ball up nicely to the far post for an unmarked Moreno, but he caught the volley all wrong and sent it flying into the stands.
    • 51'
G R. Sterling Assist Philippe Coutinho
    • 51'
      Philippe Coutinho gave the assist.
    • 51'
      R. Sterling scores for Liverpool!
    • 51'
GOAL TO LIVERPOOL - RAHEEM STERLING!! That's the breakthrough we wanted and it comes from the England man. Coutinho's through ball deflected on its way to Sterling, who cooly finished beyond Adrian.
    • 53'
There is activity on the West Ham bench and it looks like Mark Noble is getting ready to come on. He will just freshen things up in the visitors' midfield.
    • 55'
SI M. Noble SO Philippe Coutinho
    • 55'
      M. Noble enters play, replacing M. Amalfitano.
    • 55'
Allardyce is going to make that change and Amalfitano is the man who is going to come off. The Frenchman has been somewhat of a passenger all game to be honest.
    • 57'
A very stray pass from Markovic is chased by Valencia, but Can comes across to get there first and prevent any danger for his side. He's been fairly solid so far.
    • 59'
Carroll goes down after catching Can with a high foot - a challenge from which he came off worse! He is eventually back on his feet with a yellow card from the referee. He has got away with a lot today so that is fair.
    • 60'
      A. Carroll is cautioned by the referee.
    • 61'
Sterling's goal was only the second one he has scored at Anfield in the league this season. The other came on the opening day against Southampton.
    • 63'
SI C. Cole SO Philippe Coutinho
    • 63'
      A. Carroll is replaced with C. Cole.
    • 63'
Carroll is unable to continue. It appears to be an ankle problem following that challenge on Can. Carlton Cole comes on in his place up front.
    • 64'
Cole is involved immediately as he wins the ball and lays it off for Valencia, who drills a low left-footed effort towards goal but it is straight at Mignolet.
    • 65'
At the other end, Coutinho tries his luck after skipping past three defenders but Adrian gets down well to hold on to his low effort. The Brazilian has done very well this afternoon.
    • 67'
Anfield rises as they welcome back Sturridge who makes his long-awaited return from injury. He comes on with a quarter of the game to go in place of Markovic.
    • 68'
SI D. Sturridge SO Philippe Coutinho
    • 68'
      L. Marković is done for the day. D. Sturridge is his replacement.
    • 69'
The England striker's first involvement since his return sees him control the ball 25 yards from goal before being brought down by Song. Henderson fires the subsequent free kick straight into the wall again.
    • 71'
West Ham need to find an equaliser as we enter the final 20 minutes. They are searching for what would only be their fourth ever victory at Anfield.
    • 73'
West Ham are making their final change of the afternoon, as Collins limps off to be replaced by Demel. The Welshman did well to carry on after he had been struggling earlier on.
    • 74'
SI G. Demel SO Philippe Coutinho
    • 74'
      G. Demel comes on for J. Collins.
    • 74'
THAT WAS A CHANCE FOR REID! Mignolet was all over the place from the corner, but the defender couldn't direct his header towards goal. West Ham need to make the most of opportunities like that.
    • 77'
Sturridge gets his first chance after Sterling had ran at the defence and laid the ball of for him. The angle was difficult though and Adrian was able to block easily enough.
    • 79'
The ball is just out of Sturridge's reach. Lallana plays it across the face of goal but it is just too far in front of his England team mate who is desperate to get himself back on the scoresheet.
    • 80'
G D. Sturridge Assist Philippe Coutinho
    • 80'
The assist came from Philippe Coutinho.
    • 80'
      D. Sturridge scores for Liverpool!
    • 80'
GOAL TO LIVERPOOL - DANIEL STURRIDGE!! IT HAD TO HAPPEN DIDN'T IT! The hosts burst forward with purpose once again through Coutinho, who slides it into Sturridge's path and the England striker finishes well with his right foot. It's like he's never been away!
    • 81'
SI J. Ibe SO Philippe Coutinho
    • 81'
      J. Ibe enters the game and replaces Philippe Coutinho.
    • 81'
And that is Coutinho's final involvement this afternoon. He goes off to be replaced by Jordan Ibe. The Brazilian really has been superb this afternoon - setting up both goals and causing West Ham all sorts of problems.
    • 83'
Liverpool really have got their tails up now! First, Ibe comes inside from the right and draws a save out of Adrian before Sturridge can only poke the rebound wide.
    • 85'
If Sturridge and Sterling played for West Ham then you could have said that this afternoon's events were a lucky omen. The last time the Hammers won here was in 1963 with goals from Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst - three years before they scored in the World Cup final!
    • 87'
This will be just a fifth Premier League home win for the Reds if they hold out here, and only a fourth on the road for the Hammers.
    • 88'
West Ham are going to play the final minutes of this match with 10 men. Reid was unable to continue after picking up an injury, and Song will drop into centre half.
    • 90'
We are going to have four minutes of stoppage time at the end of the match.
