Thank you for joining me, Alex Stewart, for today's match which finished Manchester United 0-1 Southampton. Have a good evening and see you all again soon!
    • 0'
And so the Saints, written off in the summer and before December due to transfer business and a poor run of results now sit in third place, two points clear of their hosts.
    • 0'
Juan Mata had a number of good chances, but United fans will bemoan the lack of attacking options and the absence of Falcao from the squad, when the home side lacked a focal point.
    • 0'
Southampton's goal was the result of quick, incisive play by substitute Dusan Tadic, who played in Graziano Pelle and then stuck in the rebound after the Italian stiker hit the post.
    • 0'
Koeman found his team pushed back by United attacking wing-backs, but the Saints defended resolutely, with Fonte outstanding and Gardos very good after he replaced Alderweireld.
    • 0'
And it's finished Manchester United 0-1 Southampton. What an extraordinary result in the context of this season! It was a tense, tight battle between two very well coached, tactically astute sides which hardly saw any clear-cut chances.
    • 0'
If United can get a bit more precision going forwards, though, you would fancy them to get a goal. Join me for the second half, LIVE, shortly!
    • 0'
As things stand, both coaches wil be please: Van Gaal happy because his tactics are working and Koeman because his team are defending well and keeping their concentration up.
    • 0'
United's wing-backs have pinned back Clyne and Bertrand and Blind has been able to get forward a few times. Mata and Rooney are not having their best days though, and a few shots from deep aside, the Red Devils have not been able to turn their dominance into chances.
    • 0'
It's been an enthralling, tactical encounter so far at Old Trafford. Neither side have particularly threatened, though the Saints have had the two closer chances through Clyne and Fonte. Neither keeper has really had to make a save though, despite both teams attacking well.
    • 0'
It's all set, then, for a cracker as third hosts fourth in this afternoon's late kick-off. Join me, Alex Stewart, in a few minutes for Manchester United vs Southampton, LIVE!
    • 0'
It's an area that Van Gaal has improved for the home team as well, though, and United have four clean sheets in their last 12 league games. That does not mean this will be a dull game though, as both sides are scoring freely as well.
    • 0'
In the reverse fixture this season, Southampton famously had more possession and more shots on target by a distance and still lost. Defence will be key here and the Saints have the best record in the Premier League, conceding only 15 goals.
    • 0'
If that statistic was not daunting enought for visitors Southampton, they have an especially poor record when playing their opponents away: the south coast team has not won at Old Trafford in 27 years. Winger Eljero Elia, a recent signing from Werder Bremen, will start his first match with Dusan Tad
    • 0'
The home side have been bolstered by the return to fitness of a number of key players, including Di Maria, Shaw, and Blind. The Red Devils have been in excellent recent form, with captain Wayne Rooney to the fore. They have been especially strong at Old Trafford: only Chelsea have a better home reco

Here are the teams. Manchester United starting XI (4-3-1-2): De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Jones, Shaw; Carrick, Di Maria, Blind; Mata; Rooney, Van Persie.
    • 0'
This game is of huge importance for both teams, as the Saints could overtake their hosts with a win or a draw (on goal difference). With Arsenal emphatically beating Stoke in the early kick-off, both these teams need to keep up the pace as the chasing pack gain ground.
    • 0'
Good afternoon and welcome to this afternoon's clash between third and fourth in the Premier League, as Manchester United host Southampton, LIVE!
    • 1'
And we're off! Manchester United are in their traditional red, the visitors in their deep blue change kit. Phil Dowd takes charge and it's Southampton who start the game. The away team start brightly and Clyne flashes a shot wide after a good run.
    • 2'
United have actually deployed in a 3-5-2, with Blind on the left side of a back three and Shaw and Valencia operating as wing-backs. Ward-Prowse bends in a teasing free-kick and Southampton have an attacking throw-in.
    • 3'
Clyne sends in a deep cross which Elia gathers out wide on the far side. It's all been Southampton so far, with the home team unable to clear the ball. Valencia tries to break on the right but he is closed off immediately by Bertrand.
    • 4'
The home team finally manage an attack and Van Persie runs across the top of the Saints box before United are forced back. They retain possession though and they will need to be patient against this high tempo, pressing Southampton side.
    • 5'
Schneiderlin concedes a silly free-kick in a dangerous position for a foul on Di Maria.
    • 6'
Rooney curls it in towards Smalling and United recycle after it is cleared. Carrick puts it back in and Alderweireld is forced to head behind under pressure from Van Persie.
    • 7'
Davis heads clear from Di Maria and eventually it comes back to him. The Argentinian midfielder drives into the Saints' box and bends a shot wide, but that was encouraging play from United after sustained pressure from the away team.
    • 9'
It's been pretty breathless so far, with both teams looking composed and attacking well, as you would expect. Di Maria has looked lively and Southampton need to watch him.
    • 10'
Shaw concedes a free-kick going in hard on Elia and Southampton have a chance to put the ball into a dangerous area.
    • 11'
Ward-Prowse looks for Fonte who is challenged in the air at the back post by Carrick. They clash heads. That was excellent defending from the United midfielder.
    • 12'
Southampton cannot make anything of the corner but retain the ball. They are able to put in a few more crosses, before the home team force them to play it backwards. Patience may be the key against this United side. The home side do manage to break after a loose pass from Elia, but the attack peters
    • 14'
Blind and Shaw combine and then a teasing cross picks out Rooney but Alderweireld sweeps up and Wanyama takes it clear. Van Persie tangles with Scheniderlin but there was no malice in it.
    • 15'
Phil Jones tries to get a cross in but runs the ball out in typical fashion. Both teams are unafraid of pushing men forward, though, and this has been an excellent game so far.
    • 17'
Alderweireld is down holding his thigh after a good clearance from a Rooney through-ball. That is a worry for the Saints. Gardos is warming up but the Begian will not want to come off.
    • 19'
Alderweireld is being forced off and Gardos, who should have been sent off against Arsenal for a foul on Sanchez, is on. Gardos is tall and elegant on the ball but his decision making is sometimes poor.
    • 20'
There is some silliness over the restart and Van Persie is arguing with Mr. Dowd. United eventually get the game underway and Di Maria shots wide from deep.
    • 21'
      T. Alderweireld is done for the day. F. Gardoş is his replacement.
    • 21'
Southampton's turn to attack now, and Elia is brought down by Smalling but no free-kick is given. End-to-end is the wrong word for this: it is more a case of both teams having spells of concerted pressure, taking turns. United have looked more precise and Di Maria is on dangerous form.
    • 23'
Elia attacks at pace down the left but the attack is halted. He does look quick, maybe lacking a little sharpness due to lack of match time, but a good signing nonetheless.
    • 25'
That is a shoddy clearance from Forster, with Gardos' back pass putting the Saints keeper under pressure. The away side are able to clear their lines though.
    • 26'
Wanyama is such a physical presence for the Saints and he robs Blind and then plays a good pass out Davis. Southampton win a corner after a good cross from Ward-Prowse, who will likely take it.
    • 27'
From the ensuing corner, Fonte flashes a header wide. Arguably the two best chances this game have come for the away team.
    • 28'
Blind plays a lovely long ball into the Southampton box with Di Maria trying to run onto it. Forster elects not to come and the ball just creeps through to him, but any touch on it could have been dangerous.
    • 29'
United are starting to impose themselves on this game now, but with the pace Southampton have out wide, they may be content to soak up the pressure and look to hit on the break.
    • 30'
Ward-Prowse looks for Pelle with an overhead kick but it is too deep for the Italian striker.
    • 31'
Shaw crosses well and Van Persie's header finds Valencia unmarked. The wing-back elects not to to shoot, though, and pulls the ball back to Mata. It's cleared and that was a waste.
    • 32'
Rooney threads a through-ball into the path of Van Persie but there is too much weight on it. His passing has been awry so far today. Valencia drives at Bertrand and nutmegs him, winning a corner at the end of the attack.
    • 33'
Southampton clear, but they everyone behind the ball at the moment and it is clear they are significantly under the cosh. Fonte and Clyne coolly play the ball between them at the back before Forster clears.
    • 34'
Bertrand trips Valencia from behind and is booked. The Saints youngster is suffering at the hands of his opposite number at the moment and that booking was fair. The free-kick comes to nothing.
    • 35'
      R. Bertrand gets yellow.
    • 36'
Southampton are playing very deep and Pelle is an isolated figure. United are also compressing the space well which is causing problems when the away side try to attack.
    • 37'
Van Persie intercepts a fluffed clearance from Fonte and his pass finds Di Maria. Forster claims the Argentinian's cross, though, and Southampton will be relieved, especially given that an error gifted United a goal in the reverse fixture.
    • 38'
Luke Shaw is looking as if he is carrying some sort of strain, moving gingerly. That could upset the United system if he has to go off.
    • 39'
Clyne has perhaps worked out that his opposite number is struggling a bit at the moment and runs at him a few times. Southampton just cannot find a way through this superbly organised United side though.
    • 40'
Rooney finds Van Persie in space on the edge of the box, whose shot is superbly blocked by Gardos. The ball bounces up and towards Mata but Forster gathers. That was a scare for the away team though.
    • 41'
Bertrand attacks at the other end but he overruns the ball and De Gea, who has barely seen the ball, let alone touched it, gets the chance to restart.
    • 43'
Manchester United continue to attack but the depth of the away team's defending has prevented Forster from having too many shots on target. Di Maria puts another effort wide from deep.
    • 44'
There will be one minute of stoppage time.
    • 45'
Just as in the first half, Southampton ome out of the blocks and Davis bursts into the United box from a Ward-Prowse pass. Smalling covers and the away side have a corner. It comes to nothing but Saints have a throw-in.
    • 45'
Elia drives at the centre of the United defence then looks for the pass but is well closed down by Smalling. At the other end, Mata crosses well to Rooney, whose knock-down puts in Di Maria. The Argentinian is adjudged offside, a late but accurate call.
    • 46'
Shaw challenges Pelle brilliantly as the Italian shoots from a Bertrand cross. That was superb defending and probably prevented a goal.
    • 47'
Di Maria manages to beat a few challenges and pull the ball back to Van Persie across the penalty box. His pass is too far behind the Dutch striker, though, and Clyne hoovers it up.
    • 48'
Smalling again has to head behind after a great, whipped cross from Elia towards Pelle. The game has restarted with zip. Pelle heads the ball behind from the corner though it arguably should have been another Southampton corner.
    • 50'
Wanyama crosses but it is very high and wide, after good movement from Elia against Jones and then a clever run from Clyne to provide the overlap. Southampton's new Dutch signing looks like a smart piece of business.
    • 51'
It's Manchester United's turn to be pinned in their own half, but Shaw evenutally manages to get forwards and find Carrick. United try to hold onto the ball for a bit, just to remind themselves what it's like. Elia concedes a free-kick challenging Blind.
    • 52'
Jones heads over from Rooney's free-kick, the first United chance of the second half.
    • 53'
This is a good, probing spell of possession for the home side, working it from left to right and back again.
    • 54'
Shaw crosses and Schneiderlin clears, but that was an excellent, patient bit of attacking play from the home team. The final ball, as has so often been the case this afternoon though, just lacked the special quality needed to break down this Saints defence.
    • 56'
Clyne is rolling around following a trip from Shaw, but no free-kick is awarded. Gardos challenges Di Maria well as he runs in on goal and wins the goal kick.
    • 58'
      R. van Persie goes into the referee's book.
    • 58'
Van Persie hacks at Fonte having conceded possession to him and is rightly booked. That was a stupid, petulant challenge. Carrick gives the ball away to Elia who is then brought down by Jones but this time the Saints don't get the free-kick. Tadic is warming up, probably for Elia.
    • 59'
Clyne finds Pelle out wide and the Italian's cross almost squeezes through to an unmarked Elia. Van Persie is off and Herrera is on. Tadic's substitution has been delayed because he left his shinpads in the changing room. Oops.
    • 60'
Rooney makes a good run and slashes at half-volley close to the Southampton goal, but it only finds the belly of Forster. Rooney is now the most advanced United player.
    • 61'
Ander Herrera enters the game and replaces R. van Persie.
    • 62'
Tadic, having found what he needed, is now on for Elia, who has done well on his debut.
    • 63'
      D. Tadić enters play, replacing E. Elia.
    • 63'
That was a lovely turn and pass from Schneiderlin, but Ward-Prowse is dispossessed. Blackett is coming on for Shaw, who might well still be carrying that knock from early in the first half. It's likely that Blind will now occupy the wing-back birth.
    • 64'
      T. Blackett enters the game and replaces L. Shaw.
    • 64'
It'll be interesting to see if that raft of substitutions effects the rhythm of the game or injects some energy into it. Once again, the quick start to the half has ebbed away into a tactical game, where both sides are probbing for their opponent's weakness and not really finding any.
    • 66'
Gardos does well to bring a halt to a Di Maria and Valencia led attack. He is very good at sweeping up behind the advancing Southampton full-backs.
    • 67'
The ball is pinging between both teams at the moment, neither able to make much of it. Rooney does very well to keep possession under pressure, but otherwise, the ball is being turned over regularly.
    • 68'
Jones manages a cross, but it's poor and too close to Forster. That was a decent spell of possession but the end product was lacking.
    • 69'
      D. Tadić has scored a goal for Southampton!
    • 69'
TADIC! WHERE DID THAT COME FROM? The Serbian plays the ball through to Pelle who is running from deep. The Italian's shot is against the post, but the rebound lands at the feet of Tadic, who coolly slots home with De Gea sprawling. What can Van Gaal conjure now?
    • 70'
      D. Tadić receives a yellow card.
    • 71'
De Gea gathers well from a Ward-Prowse through ball. United have been sparked into life by that goal, but it will also inspire the Saints, who will feel that they defended well enough so far to hold on. Fellaini is on for Di Maria, presumably to offer a more physical threat.
    • 72'
Á. di María is replaced with M. Fellaini.
    • 72'
Rooney fouls Schneiderlin in the Saints' box with Fellaini lumbering into a dangerous position.
    • 73'
Clyne clears well under pressure from Rooney. Southampton must retain their cool and not succumb to the cauldron-like atmosphere of Old Trafford. Rooney's pass into the box is cut out but Pelle is booked for a foul on Mata.
    • 75'
      G. Pellè gets yellow.
    • 75'
Mata's free-kick is easily cleared and as Saints try to break, Carrick halts it illegally and wins a yellow card. Southampton have dropped fewer points from winning positions than any other team in the Premier League and will hope dearly that record can continue.
    • 76'
      M. Carrick receives a yellow card.
    • 77'
Valencia crosses dangerously and Rooney helps it on, but Fonte sticks out a leg and hooks it clear. Eventually the ball ends up on the left and Blind bends in a superb cross, which Forster misjudges. The keeper palms the ball straight to Mata, who shoots wide. That was a waste.
    • 78'
MATA OH DEAR! Blind curls in a delicious low cross and the Spaniard spoons it over from six yards out when it was easier to hit the target. That's two spurned chances in two minutes for United and Mata.
    • 79'
The spiky, combative Reed is on for Southampton. They will need his energy and tackling to see this match out.
    • 80'
      H. Reed enters play, replacing S. Davis.
    • 81'
Herrera, under pressure from Schneiderlin, does well to keep the ball. United manage to free Valencia on the right, but his cross lacks pace and is comfortably gathered by the imposing Forster.
    • 83'
Tadic steals the ball away and Schneiderlin whumps it long. Southampton don't need to start clearing it long just yet, one feels. United come back again and Valencia's cross is volleyed wide by Mata. The Spaniard is having a day to forget in front of goal.
    • 84'
Red waves are crashing onto the Saints box now, but nothing is happening for them at the moment. Another shot hits Wanyama and dribbles through to Forster.
    • 86'
United get a corner as Valencia's corner finds Herrera, whose header is deflected behind. It's aimed to the large frame of Fellaini but he is well-marked and the ball eventually finds the safe hands of Fraser Forster.
    • 87'
Forster really milked that goal kick for time.
    • 88'
Tadic, who has been electric since his introduction, robs a United player and then plays it into Pelle, whose shot is very, very wide. Reed was in a good position too, so that counts as a missed opportunity.
    • 89'
Tadic is down and writhing with De Gea trying to convince him to get up. That came from a clash between Jones and the goalscorer, an accidental tangle of legs. Manchester United have five minutes in which to lump the ball forwards to Fellaini.
    • 90'
Southampton attempt to keep the ball in the corner from that buut United break. Wanyama clears and that is it. Southampton have smash-and-grabbed at the Theatre of Dreams!
    • EXTRA TIME
    • 90'
Tadic does wonderfully to take the ball into the corner on the left and then ghost past two United defenders. Southampton win a throw in and then manage to get a corner, again through the Serbian's work. He has been wonderful since coming on.
    • HALF TIME
    • 90'
Forster again gathers well from a deep cross after Fellaini knocked the ball down well to Rooney. The United striker has had scant support, though, and the home team have never really got enough men forward to threaten.
    • 45'
And that's the first half! It's Manchester United 0-0 Southampton.
    • 90'
Blackett does exactly that after good work from Blind, and Rooney almost steals in. Things are very tense now, but Fonte is a picture of calm as he chests the ball back to Forster.
