Fiji has defeated New Caledonia 2-0 on home soil to win the men's gold medal at the South Pacific Games for the second time while Papua New Guinea won the women's gold medal.

A 10,000 strong crowd was rewarded for turning up to the National Stadium in Suva on a wet evening with Fiji captain Esala Masi and his cousin Manoa Masi scoring the goals.

Manoa gave Fiji the lead on the half hour mark when he got on the end of a cross from Esala and beat New Caledonia goalkeeper Michel Hne.

In the second half, Esala got on the scoresheet himself with a cracking 35-metre free-kick.

Etienne Mermer grabbed the only goal of the game as Vanuatu beat Tahiti 1-0 to clinch the bronze medal, in the curtain-raiser.

PNG was victorious in the women's tournament against Guam while Tonga edged out Tahiti for the bronze.
