The Central Coast Mariners have defeated ACT Premier League outfit Belconnen United 2-1 in a friendly thanks to two goals from 17-year-old triallist Taylor Beaton.
Beaton, who played the first half of the game for Belconnen, switched sides at half-time and scored after 59 minutes to cancel out Dustin Wells' first-half strike, before netting the winner deep into injury-time.
"From a fitness point of view, the boys worked hard enough, got 90 minutes under their belt, or in (left-back Dean) Heffernan's case 45 minutes and from that point of view tonight was OK," said Mariners football manager Lawrie McKinna afterwards.
"Matthew Osman came on the last 15 minutes, had a few touches on the ball and looked quite confident and he'll just build on that now and his contribution was very promising.”
The Mariners take on the ACT Rockets at the Deakin Football Centre on Friday night, and McKinna says he is looking for more from his depleted squad.
"We do need to do better, it's simple," said McKinna.
"It's only pre-season, but tonight wasn't good enough and I don't think any of the boys will feel too great about tonight's performance."
