Manchester United links 'not the first', says focused Ryan

Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan has shrugged off speculation linking him to Manchester United and says he is very content with life at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Stories last month stated that Ryan was wanted by United as a replacement for goalkeeper David De Gea.

The 26-year-old has caught the eye in the past 18 months after starring for Brighton in the Premier League.

And Ryan, who joined the Seagulls in 2017 from Spanish side Valencia, believes reports of the Red Devils' interest is just part and parcel of elite football.

"Yeah, it’s not the first time something like that has come out," Ryan told The World Game

"If I played for every club I’d been linked with I would have had quite a career up until now.

"For whatever reason these things come out in the media, I don’t know who starts them or where they come from, but I just keep my head down here and focus on trying to keep the little round ball out of the back of the net.

"That’s all I can do at the end of the day. I don’t feel like I’ve changed one bit as a goalkeeper.

"I’ve always had the same approach and try to be professional and apply myself in every way by sacrificing and dedicating my life to everything I can do for the club to be successful.

"When you’re playing in a bigger league like here in England, the biggest league in the world, the exposure is just an added bonus I guess, if you seem to find some form and you’re doing well.

"Just as much as (when) you’re not in form, the critics (are) that much more around and evident also. I just keep my head down and try to do my best day-in-day-out.

"Try to contribute to the success of the club. It’s outside noise at the end of the day. I just keep my head down and do what I have to, keep at my physical peak and mental condition to help the team."

Ryan has three and a half years left on his contract at the Amex. The impressive shot-stopper made 38 appearances last season and has not missed a first-team match this season.

At the moment Ryan is ranked fifth in the Premier League for saves and 13th for clean sheets.

Brighton beat the drop after coming up from the Championship last season and the Australian revealed he is more than happy with life at the Seagulls under manager Chris Hughton.

"The environment that is provided here by the club… the facilities, the way in which they go about in their process of signing players and hiring staff around the club, from whether they’re the cleaner or someone in administration, they’re very thorough," he said.

"All those sorts of things makes it a pleasure to come in and work each day and try and contribute to the success of the club. Everyone is always willing to go out of their way to help someone and give you their time.

"On the pitch, in terms of facilities and the gym and what we have available for us and how modern and new it is, it’s just the perfect environment to be in to grow and progress. At the end of the day we only get this one life and we’re only fortunate enough to be footballers for so long.

"I’m just enjoying the ride and when you’re in an environment like this it makes it a hell of a lot easier."
