The Sheffield Wednesday midfielder was shown red for the first time in his career in the EFL Championship on Sunday (AEDT) by former A-League referee Gillett, a fellow Australian.
Taking charge of his 15th Championship game of the season, Gillett, 33, showed no leniency and even less sentiment to his compatriot when he brandished a straight red for a challenge that seemed to merit a yellow at worst.
Down 1-0 at the time of the dismissal, Wednesday went on the lose the match 5-0 against Blackburn Rovers.
Luongo and coach Garry Monk were left dumbfounded by the red card and confirmed afterwards they would be appealing to the English Football League immediately.
That appeal was successful, meaning Luongo's record remains unblemished and he escapes suspension.
The Owls' next match is against the Socceroo's former club QPR in the FA Cup on Saturday.
