It’s the running of the Bulls as A-League new boys adopt a nickname

A-League expansion outfit Macarthur South West Sydney are likely to be dubbed The Bulls, as the club delves into the history of the region to deliver a fitting nickname and crest.

With the team’s official name, colours and badge due to be unveiled at a gala function on 15 May, the power-brokers at Sydney’s third A-League franchise have warmed to the Bulls theme in homage to a past when the area around Campbelltown was christened “Cowpastures” after a renegade herd of cattle was discovered there in 1795.

The herd was subsequently destroyed after being deemed too wild to be tamed. But the Bulls connotations live on.

Bulls won’t feature in the official club name - which will be something more prosaic like Macarthur FC or Macarthur South West United - but the club are committed to grabbing the Bulls by the horns with the beasts likely to feature on the shirt badges.

MSWS will enter the competition in 2020-2021 as the 12th team, with black and white the anointed colours.

The Bulls connection with the area has already been harnessed by other codes - Liverpool Bulls rugby union team and the Macarthur Bulls NSW Police Rugby League Football Club are already up and running.

The name, badge and colours are still to be approved by FFA, but the club are still confident that the launch will proceed on the appointed date.

There were some initial discussions on tying the club’s identity to an Aboriginal nation with Fairfax previously reporting that the expansion team had registered the potential trading names of Dharawal Bulls Football Club, Dharawal Football Club and Dharawal FC.

The people of the Dharawal nation are the original custodians of the land which covers the existing borders of the entire Macarthur South West Sydney catchment area.

However, the Bulls have won the day.

None of the options considered by the club feature the name “Sydney” in the title.

The club declined to comment when contacted by The World Game.
