I asked Mooy about Arzani, reveals Wagner

Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner has been monitoring the progress of Aussie young gun Daniel Arzani and asked Aaron Mooy about his Socceroos teammate.

Arzani has been a hot property in world football after his stunning cameo displays off the bench at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in June.

The 19-year-old was the youngest player in Russia and showed no fear against the likes of France, Denmark and Peru.

Arzani, like Mooy, has been snapped up by Manchester City from sister club Melbourne City and loaned out to gain European experience. The winger has joined Scottish champions Celtic for the next two years.
Wagner confirmed to The World Game he had been keeping a close eye on Arzani, but didn’t seek to bring the forward in on loan to Huddersfield like he did with Mooy two years ago.

“There was no interest but I followed him,” Wagner said.

“I saw him in the World Cup and I spoke to Aaron about him as well. So it wasn’t a player for us, interesting us in this window. But I’m aware of him and the steps he has done.”

Wagner is preparing his team for a visit to the Etihad Stadium tomorrow to face Manchester City and the 46-year-old revealed he had no intention of selling his own Antipodean star in the off-season.

Interest in Mooy piqued, with Newcastle United and West Ham keen to sign the Socceroo, after his performances at the World Cup.

The midfielder was vital in getting the Terriers promoted into the Premier League in 2017 and helping them stay up last season.

Despite Mooy being linked to other clubs, Wagner says selling the 27-year-old was never going to happen.

“This was never on our radar,” he said.

“Maybe another example of where I can say the chairman and I are on the same page. I can say he totally understands what it means to build.

You have to have consistency and you can’t sell your best players.”
Wagner admits there may come a time when the Yorkshire club are forced to sell a prized asset like Mooy, but that moment is not now.

“There will be the moment where it will happen,” he conceded.

“This is the nature of the size of our club. But at this stage, and this means in the last years, this is one of the keys of why we were able to progress.

“We were able to keep consistently our best players together, even if they had one or another offer. This is where our chairman absolutely understands the business and why this was never on our radar.”
