Gremio signs Chilean Beausejour

Two-time Brazilian champion Gremio has signed Chilean striker Jean Beausejour until the end of the year, the club said on Friday.

Beausejour, 21, reached a deal with Gremio on Thursday after ending his contract with Swiss club Servette because of a dispute over unpaid salaries, Gremio said on its website.

Official details on the transaction were not released, but local media reported that Gremio paid $US1 million ($A1.31 million) to acquire the Chilean.

Beausejour had previously played for Universidad de Chile and had several appearances with his country's under-20 national team.

"It's a great opportunity to play for Gremio," Beausejour told Pele's website. "I hope to take advantage of it."

Gremio, a two-time Copa Libertadores champion and a four-time Brazilian Cup winner, is playing in the second division of the Brazilian championship because of a dismal campaign in the top league last year.

The team is currently fourth in the tournament's 22-team standings with 18 points from 11 matches.
