A FIFA World Cup star, the 31-year-old will join the A-League newcomers on a two-year deal after terminating his contract with Greek Super League outfit AEK Athens.
Kone is Western Melbourne's first official player signing and comes only seven weeks since the club was granted an A-League licence.
Known as a tricky winger or pacy striker, who can bring plenty of pizzaz on the pitch, Kone built his reputation in the Serie A playing for top clubs such as Udinese, Fiorentina and Bologna.
His flashy style, both on and off the pitch, was one of the big drawcards for Western Melbourne club officials who are confident he is the perfect player to help entice new fans in Melbourne's busy sporting landscape.
Western Melbourne Chief Executive Lou Sticca heralded the signing of Kone as the start of things to come for the burgeoning A-League outfit.
“I am delighted to secure Kone for our new club. It shows tremendous faith by Kone to sign on not only as our first marquee but as our first player full stop,” Sticca said.
"Panagiotis has played at the highest level and represented his country at a World Cup in Brazil. He's an attacker who will get the fans off their seats.
"He brings genuine quality to our club and the league and has an international profile which will boost our club's reputation globally.
"This signing shows how serious we are about building a strong squad for our first season in the A-League and we cannot wait for Panagiotis to arrive and get started."
A veteran of 28 caps for Greece, Kone started in all four of Greece's matches at the 2014 World Cup.
The former Bologna captain has endured a few controversial moments off the park. including threatening to punch Manchester United's Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic during an international match.
Western Melbourne are expected to send a strength and fitness coach to Greece later this month to help Kone's preparation before he joins the club's official pre-season program in June.
