Fowler will lure quality imports to get Brisbane roaring again, claims Fong

Robbie Fowler will use the broad sweep of his extensive contacts book to snare some “really interesting” visa signings to fix broken Brisbane Roar.

That’s the expectation of the club’s vice-chairman Chris Fong, who believes the former Liverpool star striker will meld cannily sourced imports with emerging youngsters and proven local talent to put the three-time A-League champions back on the map.

The unveiling on Tuesday of the 44-year-old known as 'God' as the Roar’s new messiah is acknowledged as a risk by Fong, due to his unproven track record.

But he believes it can also be a match made in heaven.

“Robbie’s presence here will attract some really interesting visa players ... he has great contacts and relationships across the football world and that’s going to be a big asset,” Fong said.

“People are going to be looking and wondering who his visa signings will be.

“He’s put a lot of thought into the make up of the squad he wants to build ... he has certain ideas which will be revealed in the pre-season.

“He’s been waiting a long time (for a coaching opportunity) and has his UEFA coaching badges and that was also a factor.

“His knowledge of players and his ideas are compelling.

“As owners, we get a great personal reward for giving opportunities like this and the feeling is even greater when it works out.”

With around a dozen Roar players coming off contract, Fowler will be able to mould and meld a squad of his own making.

And having scrupulously assessed the Roar playing ranks from afar in recent months - in the hope of taking charge - he is already ahead of the game in making the changes he deems necessary.

“This is a chance for him to set the tone and make his mark,” Fong said.

“It’s a great opportunity for him.

“We could have got a big name coach (in terms of playing track record) but it’s all about getting the right fit.

“There are no guarantees whoever you bring in.

“We want to rebuild and reset, and this appointment is also an endorsement of the A-League as a whole.

“We’re playing our part in making this competition far more entertaining than it has been, with better quality football and a beautiful style of football.
“Across the board we need to get the metrics up, from fans to TV audiences.

“We’ve receiving some positive messaging from the FFA in accepting the recommendations of the New Leagues Working Group, and it’s time we all thought about working together.

“We now see positivity where there has been uncertainty previously.”

While skeptics might see Fowler’s arrival as more showbiz than substance, due to his lack of sideline experience, Fong has no doubt he will prove any misgivings unfounded.

“He has a two-year contract and we’re totally committed to this (project),” he said.

“He’s obviously unproven as a coach (to this point) but football has been his life.

“Like any new coach, it’s results driven and it’s a tough environment.

“But you need to have the backbone of support from the club and we’ve taken our time with this appointment.

“Robbie is very clever, knows what he wants and just needed the opportunity to make the move.

“I think we’ve been lucky enough to get him. I think we’re a good match.

“People talk about his past as a player and what a great striker he was, but that wasn’t even in our conversation.

“We weren’t focusing on that area. It wasn’t part of our remit. Not once did we talk about him being a player, it’s all about him as a coach.”

Fowler will watch the players train on Wednesday and attend Thursday’s final fixture of a dire season at home to Adelaide United before returning to the UK to finalise his move to Brisbane ahead of pre-season.

“I think a lot of people will be very positively surprised by this appointment,” Fong said.

“He knows what he’s going to do and hasn’t just decided to be a coach overnight. This has been his intended pathway for a long time and we’re fortunate to have him.”
