Former USSR striker passes away

Former USSR striker Ramaz Shengelia has died at the age of 55, the Georgian Football Federation confirmed.

Shengelia, who scored 10 goals in 26 appearances for his country and featured at the 1982 World Cup finals in Spain, was named the Soviet Union's player of the year in both 1978 and 1981.

A statement on national federation website www.gff.ge read: "The Georgian Football Federation expresses deep sorrow and condolences to the family of Ramaz Shengelia, his relatives, friends and colleagues over the death of a prominent member of the football family."

Shengelia spent most of his playing career with Dinamo Tbilisi, helping the club win the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1981.
