As it stands, there are a number of quality players across the world who are without a club and looking for a new contract.
While 22-year-old German midfielder Max Meyer, a free agent currently negotiating with clubs such as Crystal Palace and Sevilla, and 25-year-old Brazilian winger Bernard will likely remain in Europe, the more experienced players could well consider Australia as their next destination.
In no particular order, the following eight free agents are 30 years old or over and could potentially fit the A-League's marquee parameters.
1. Samir Nasri
Once referred to as the 'new Zidane', Nasri was one of the star Premier League players in the early part of this decade. He's had up and down moments at Arsenal, Manchester City and more recently Sevilla.
At only 31 he might still want to stay in Europe, but the latest rumours have him linked with Egyptian club Pyramids FC.
Last season, he signed with Turkish side Antalyaspor but only played eight matches before the contract was terminated in January 2018. He was then handed a six-month ban from UEFA for breaching WADA rules.
2. Yaya Toure
Although the 35-year-old wasn't a regular starter for Manchester City last season, he still managed to play 17 matches.
Toure is one of the all-time great Premier League midfielders and could definitely draw in the crowds.
However, like most older marquees, his fitness could be an issue. Also, it's rumoured that Premier League side Crystal Palace are considering making an offer.
3. Giuseppe Rossi
One of the most natural finishers of his generation, Rossi's career has been ravaged by injury.
The 31-year-old has played for Manchester United, Villarreal, Fiorentina and, last season, Genoa.
Not as big a name as Alessandro Del Piero but could appeal to a lot of fans in Australia.
Reports indicated that he has most recently been training with New York Red Bulls, and a move to the MLS could be more appealing for the striker who was born in the United States.
4. Diego Capel
The 30-year-old Spanish winger is looking for a club, and says he is open to numerous offers.
He made his name in Spain with Sevilla in the late 2000s and went on to play for Sporting in Portugal in the early 2010s.
It is a worrying sign that he did not play all of last season due to a hamstring injury, which he aggravated when trialling for MLS side Seattle Sounders last year.
5. Hatem Ben Arfa
This is a bit of a long shot, as Ben Arfa can still offer a lot at 31 years old.
Most recently he was playing for PSG, although saw little game time. Ben Arfa made his name with Lyon, Marseille and Newcastle United.
Temperamental, but an incredibly exciting talent when he is on form.
6. Keisuke Honda
The 32-year-old is reportedly very close to signing a deal with Melbourne Victory.
Honda has played, and scored, in the last three FIFA World Cups.
Last season he played for Mexican side Pachuca, scoring 10 goals in 29 matches.
7. Nilmar
The 34-year-old Brazilian striker has been without a club since December 2017.
But he has scored with regularity at everywhere he has been, most notably with Villarreal in La Liga.
8. Anderson
The former Manchester United central midfielder has been without a club since January.
But at 30 years old he surely still has a lot to offer, and the Australian lifestyle could suit the Brazilian.
