Spanish champions Deportivo La Coruna won the first trophy of the season in Spain with a 2-0 aggregate victory over Cup winners Espanyol in the Super Cup.

After a goalless draw in the first leg in Barcelona, Deportivo went ahead after 58 minutes of the return match in their Riazor Stadium on Sunday, Djalminha firing home a free-kick that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Diego Tristan, a close-season recruit from Mallorca, added the second three minutes later.

Their victory in Spain's traditional curtain raiser will put Javier Irureta?s side in good heart ahead of the start of the season on September 10.
