The 22-year-old, a breakthrough Socceroos defender under Ange Postecoglou, has been told by 2.Bundesliga's new Portuguese coach Vitor Pereira that his place in the struggling team cannot be guaranteed in the lead up to June's 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
And an exasperated Degenek has revealed that the club is sticking steadfastly to a buyout clause in his contract.
Capped five times for Australia, Degenek, who is desperate for game time to remain in the national team frame as Russia beckons, is now in a state of flux as the European January transfer window nears closure.
However, it remains open in much of Asia and the Middle East until late February.
"It's disappointing because I am on the lowest wages at the club and while the coach is probably not going to play me, they have also got this buyout clause they are asking for, and that's making things difficult," Degenek said.
"The club are going to be rebuilding and I've talked to the new coach about my situation, and I am looking to move because I need to be playing.
"I feel as though I am being pushed around a bit (by the club) and they are not helping me find a solution.
"But I am not giving up and hopefully something can be sorted out soon ... maybe in the next few days.
"I want and need to be playing every week and that's my goal, especially since the Socceroos are my top priority.
"To get selected for the national team, it's important to be getting game time at your club.
"Looking ahead, I just need to know what I am gong to be doing and where I am going to be playing."
Degenek, who can operate in midfield or across the back four, was on the cusp of a January move to the Chinese Super League before the new rule changes, which limit the number of foreigners who can start in games to just three, came into effect last week.
"It probably would have gone through but for the new rules," he said.
"But that's the way things go sometimes and I'm not having a sook about it."
Degenek has subsequently attracted interest from Serbia, whilst there may also be options elsewhere in Germany's second tier and in the English Championship, should the impasse between the player and the club be bridged regarding the terms of his release.
The 22-year-old was a mainstay last season in his debut campaign for the club, with 25 league appearances, but has made only eight so this season with 1860 Munich set to resume after the winter break at home to Greuther Furth on Saturday (AEDT).
