Cahill insider Robertson reveals why Socceroos great is right man for Everton job

The appointment of Tim Cahill as Everton assistant manager could be the perfect addition to help the Toffees return to winning ways, according to ex-Socceroo Mark Robertson.

Cahill, a former Everton star who played 226 games across nine seasons with the club, has been tipped to step out in his new role alongside interim boss Duncan Ferguson as early as this Saturday night (AEDT) when Chelsea travel to Goodison Park.

In what has been characterised as a melding of fire and ice, the two Goodison Park legends look poised to reunite with the goal of transforming the short-term fortunes of the team which has plunged into relegation zone under sacked coach Marco Silva.

Lancashire-based Robertson believes a Cahill-Ferguson combo could be just what the Toffees need, just months after the Socceroos legend gained his UEFA badges and subsequently joined the club’s academy staff.

“I’d be expecting to see them together on the bench this weekend - and you know what it will win over the fans,” said the Manchester City talent scout.

“It will generate excitement and expectation and it will be all about whether they can revive the team and get things going again.

“Duncan Ferguson has a great mentality for the game and is a winner, tactically I’m not sure whether he’s been allowed to put his own input into things there over the years but now he certainly can do that now.

“He’ll be chomping at the bit for that and with Timmy coming in alongside him it would be a nice blend.

“They’re good friends having played together (at the back end of Ferguson’s career), and that’s obviously important.

“Timmy’s a cool and laid back sort of character whereas Duncan tends to live on the edge - so they might be able to play off each other.

“Personally, I think it would be a great fit – Duncan being the fiery Scot and Timmy being the relaxed Aussie. It could work a treat.”

Cahill’s 15-year-old son Shae recently signed a scholarship deal at the club where the record breaking Socceroo broke through to become a true global star.

Robertson’s son, Alexander, 16, recently signed a long-term deal at Manchester City - and both parents regularly discuss the respective career paths of their boys.

Longer-term, Robertson feels the mooted return of David Moyes - who brought Cahill to Everton during his 11-year reign - might be a “good shout”.

“If you’re in a relegation fight the first thing you want to be doing is winning games and David Moyes has that track record behind them at Everton,” he added.

“He’d be a wise old head. But, who knows what will happen. If Duncan and Timmy can turn things around wouldn’t you also be tempted to stick with them?

“If you strip it all back and look at the guys who were winners every time they pulled on a blue jersey then there was no better than Timmy and Duncan Ferguson.

“Timmy’s put a lot of work into getting his badges and he obviously has the hunger for it.

“Now it’s just a case of making the most of the opportunities and I’m sure he’ll do that because he’s professional and is so popular with everybody around the club.”
