Blunt Gladbach held at home by Freiburg

Borussia Monchengladbach dropped two potentially valuable points in the race for the Bundesliga's UEFA Champions League places with a 1-1 draw at home to mid-table Freiburg.

Alassane Plea equalised for the hosts in their one moment of inspiration, cancelling out Vincenzo Grifo's early opener for the visitors.

Italy international Grifo played for Gladbach last season and scored against his former side in the 10th minute, converting Pascal Stenzel's cross.

Plea's equaliser came six minutes later from close range.

The hosts went on the attack after half-time, with Jonas Hofmann denied by Alexander Schwolow and Thorgan Hazard's long-range shot flying just over the bar, but they could not find a winner.

"I enjoyed it, and the point even more," Grifo told Eurosport of a goal he didn't celebrate out of respect for his former team-mates.

"I am mega-happy that we picked up a point - Gladbach have not been in form recently and we made use of that."

Former Brisbane Roar forward missed out again for Freiburg through injury.

Gladbach went third but are just one point above fourth-placed RB Leipzig, who visit struggling Schalke on Saturday afternoon (Sunday morning AEDT), while Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen could move within touching distance with weekend wins.

Borussia Dortmund can go top of the table with a draw at Hertha Berlin in Saturday afternoon's (Sunday morning AEDT) late game as leaders Bayern Munich host Mainz on Sunday afternoon (Monday morning AEDT).
