Being dropped from Matildas was 'the best thing for my career', reveals Logarzo

Chloe Logarzo has opened up on being dumped from the Matildas on the cusp of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, revealing coach Alen Stajcic's decision to cut her was the best thing that has happened for her career.

The 23-year-old said it was the heartbreak of being cut from the team which helped her turn her career around and cement her position as one of Australia’s most exciting players leading into next year’s World Cup in France.

Logarzo told The World Game that her approach to football has completely changed over the past four years and it wouldn’t have been possible without the underlying support of the Matildas head coach.

“Getting cut hurt a lot, but to be honest I was a little s**t and he (Stajcic) didn’t have any other way of getting through to me,” Logarzo said.

"It was the best thing for my career.

“I think he knew that what I needed to wake up to myself and start taking my game more seriously. He has said to me that there was never any doubt that I would fight my way back into the team.

“I didn’t understand back then why the little stuff mattered, but now I do and get very annoyed when others don’t make the same effort.”
The fight to earn her spot back in the Matildas squad wasn’t the first major hurdle faced by Logarzo in her career.

The Sydney FC W-League star was told by many of her junior coaches that she didn’t have what it takes to make it at the elite level.

“It was always I wasn’t tall enough, big enough or good enough to take my game further,” Logarzo said.

“To be honest, back then they were probably right!

“It takes a lot to get that out of your head and focus on becoming the best player you can be.”

It has been a long off season for Logarzo, who decided against a potentially lucrative stint playing for a NWSL club in America.

Instead, she remained in Australia for specialist training to get herself in the best possible shape ahead of the 2019 Women's World Cup.

Logarzo hopes the decision will help add a few new strings to her bow ahead of the Matildas' tour of Europe, home series against Chile and the upcoming W-League season.

“There were so many things I felt I needed to fix up in my game and it wouldn’t have been possible had I been playing with a club overseas where they just need you to deliver from the outset,” she said.

“I’ve been working with Matildas assistant coach Gary Van Egmond to improve my ability in front of goal.

“When I scored against the USA earlier this year it was a culmination of all that extra work with Gary.

“It has also been a great break for me and has me fit, firing and more driven coming into a massive few months of football.”
