Auer savours 'special' win

Former Mainz striker Benjamin Auer revelled in his new club Alemannia Aachen's giant-killing act last night, but is still a fan of the Bundesliga leaders.

Auer scored the opening goal as second-division Aachen claimed a shock 2-1 victory over his former club in the German Cup. Mainz has won eight of its nine league matches this season.

"Of course it is always special to play against the Bundesliga leaders and Mainz deserve to be at the top," he said.

"This was a big game for our fans, the club and of course for us players too so I think it was a successful event for all concerned.

"With the fantastic fans behind us, it is a lot easier. I think we attacked well, got at them and worked hard for our chances.

"In the end, we deserved to win."

Auer played for Mainz between 2002 and 2006, when it was promoted to the top flight under former coach Jurgen Klopp.

"I will be keeping my fingers crossed for Mainz on Sunday again," admitted the Mainz fan who ended the club's double dreams last night.
