Atletico Madrid have been dealt a setback five days before their La Liga campaign begins with news that striker Diego Costa has suffered a thigh injury.

Atletico said in a statement on Tuesday that Costa had hurt his left thigh in the final minute of the team's 2-1 friendly win over Juventus on Saturday in Stockholm, but did not say how long he would be out of action.

Costa missed a large part of the last campaign due to a knee injury but had impressed during pre-season, scoring four goals in last month's thumping 7-3 friendly win over local rivals Real Madrid.

According to widespread reports on Tuesday in Spanish media, Atletico are negotiating with Valencia to sign striker Rodrigo for 60 million euros ($A99 million).

Elsewhere, La Liga champions Barcelona's substitute goalkeeper Neto has been ruled out of action for up to two months after wrist surgery.

In a statement on Tuesday, Barca said the Brazilian, a 26 million euro ($A43 million) off-season recruit from Valencia, would be sidelined for six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery to treat a fracture to his left wrist which he suffered on Sunday in training.

Ernesto Valverde's side begin their title defence this Sunday away to Athletic Bilbao.
