‘Homesick’ Lesiotis poised for shock Wanderers exit with Melbourne return looming

Midfielder Anthony Lesiotis - Carl Robinson’s first signing for Western Sydney - is poised to depart Wanderers for a possible return to Melbourne Victory.

Melbourne City, the club Lesiotis first played an A-League game for, might also be in the frame, as the 20-year-old looks to head back to his home town.

Lesiotis has, according to sources in Melbourne, cited “homesickness” for seeking a release just four months into his two-year deal at Wanderland.

It’s understood Wanderers are likely to reluctantly sanction his departure, with the Young Socceroo yet to clock up a single minute so far this season.

Robinson was a long-time Lesiotis fan, and was keen to bring him to Newcastle when he was in charge of the Jets.

However, he’s been squeezed out of contention at Bankwest Stadium where Robinson has the likes of ex-Premier League midfielder Jordan Mutch, former Rangers man Graham Dorrans, Keanu Baccus and Jordan O’Doherty at his disposal.
Robinson pledged after taking charge in October not to stand in the way of players wanting to move on, and it appears he may be true to his word regarding Lesiotis’ ambitions.

The number six featured 23 times for Victory last season across the A-League and AFC Champions League.

On joining Wanderers in November, Lesiotis said: “I spoke to Carl (Robinson) and he was interested in bringing me over, I really liked the sound of the project and the plans he’s got for the club.

“Last season I learned a lot on what it’s like to play a professional season, playing regular games and learning off other players in big games.”
