Uruguay's former star striker spoke to Australian journalists on behalf of La Liga, where he spent the peak years of his career - three seasons with Villarreal and four with Atletico Madrid.

He was La Liga's top scorer in 2004-05 (25 goals) and 2008-09 (32 goals), taking out the Pichichi Trophy as well as the European Golden Shoe on both occasions.

Towards the end of his career he played in Japan, India and Hong Kong, and expressed regret at not having come to Australia.

"I didn't have the chance to go there [to play in Australia]," Forlan said.

"I wanted to, but there was not any offer at that moment.
"I really like Australia, I've been there a couple of times. I was watching Australian football but I didn't have the chance [to experience it].

"I know it would have been really good and nice - it's a really nice lifestyle and also good football.

"Maybe as a coach - you never know!"

Forlan gathered a host of honours in his storied career, including winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup Golden Ball for player of the tournament as Uruguay made the semi-finals, the 2011 Copa America, the UEFA Europa League with Atleti, and the Premier League with Manchester United.
