Socceroos farewell game reportedly scrapped

Australia are set to abandon their traditional farewell match before the 2018 FIFA World Cup and will instead have a training camp overseas.

A report by Fairfax Media has claimed that new manager Bert van Marwijk will instead host a training camp in Antalya, Turkey.

In the meantime, Football Federation Australia will be seeking to finalise two friendly matches in late May and early June in the leadup to Russia.

Each of Australia’s four previous World Cup campaigns have all featured farewell camps and games in 1974 against Uruguay, in 2006 against Greece in Melbourne), New Zealand in 2010 in Melbourne and against and South Africa in Sydney for the 2014 event.

FFA has decided against the trend and while Chile, Ireland or Scotland were reportedly potential opponents for a farewell match, state governments weren’t prepared to meet the asking price to host Chile while Ireland and Scotland arranged other games instead.

As a result, Van Marwijk's side will likely play just two warm-up matches shortly before the tournament begins, with Hungary in Budapest and the Czech Republic in Prague the most likely candidates according to the Fairfax report.
