The 33-year-old attacker, who quit international football in 2014 with 63 caps, says he doesn’t regret the decision.
But his recent impressive form for a reviving Brisbane Roar has sparked debate over whether van Marwijk, who signed Holman for Feyenoord in 2002, might extend him an olive branch for Russia.
Should the Dutchman open the lines of communication, then Holman - with three goals in his last four A-League games - will be all ears.
“I haven’t regretted the decision I made (to retire from international football) for one moment,” Holman said.
“But if it comes down to the point of your country asking you to play, then that’s a completely different question.
“But for me to even to be thinking that way, and to even warrant selection, hasn’t crossed my mind.
“I retired for a reason, and it was something I thought long and hard about.
“In that sense, nothing has changed.”
Holman has welcomed the appointment of van Marwijk, declaring Australia are in “good hands” heading into the FIFA World Cup in less than four months.
There are those who believe that a Holman sequel in the green and gold could herald the rousing performances which brought him a brace of goals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
He offers a brand of football intelligence and on-field perception which will not be lost on van Marwijk and his assistant Mark van Bommel.
Holman, though, views the comeback chatter as premature and hypothetical.
“The reality is that the current crop of players have been there and know what’s going on,” he said.
“For van Marwijk to come in and completely shake things up would be tough to do.”
After a spate of niggling injuries, most recently a hamstring strain, Holman is simply pleased to be playing again, let alone ruminating on a second Socceroos coming.
“I’m just happy to playing well and scoring goals, and I’m also pleased the Socceroos have selected a very good coach,” he added.
“It’s hard for any coach to come in and, in a way, make miracles happen, considering there are only a handful of games before entering the biggest tournament in the world.
“Van Marwijk has great experience across a couple of continents and there aren’t too many others who come so highly recommended.”
Holman is one of a host of Roar players coming off contract but, in his words, he is just “letting his feet do the talking” in terms of attracting an extension.
“I’m happy to be fit again and I’m feeling great,” he said.
“It’s a matter of working your gut off and sooner or later you get the rewards, that’s how I’ve always approached the game.”
